Classic Oreo Icebox Dessert

July 2, 2012
Who doesn't love an Oreo?  Well, they're even better in this classic Oreo Icebox Dessert, with creamy layers of Oreos, pudding, and whipped cream.  Yum!

Classic Oreo Icebox Dessert image

I have been craaaaaaving  this Oreo icebox dessert for about a month now, ever since our end-of-school ice cream party when my 'room mom' brought in Oreos for the students to put on their ice cream.  Yes, I'm highly suggestible ... advertising works very well on me, especially when there's chocolate involved.

Who doesn't love an Oreo?  They're even better in this classic dessert, with creamy layers of Oreo, pudding, and whipped cream.

I went right out that afternoon and bought a package of Oreos so I could whip up this tasty dessert.  But can you believe I didn't actually make it until this  weekend?

Let me tell you, my friends, that's showing some serious restraint for me!  It's sad to say, willpower is not one of my key strengths.

But alas, I succombed to the call of the Oreo.

I love Oreos.  And as much as I love them, I think I love them even more when they're surrounded by layers of pudding and whipped cream.   Like in this no-bake Oreo icebox dessert.

It looks innocent enough, right?  Just some whipped cream with a sprinkling of crushed Oreos?

Ah, but then you cut in and reveal the delicious and devilish layers lurking inside!  Creamy goodness we all can love.

Taking advantage of instant chocolate pudding and prepared whipped topping to create its creamy layers, this no-bake dessert truly couldn't be any easier to make.

Simply create the bottom layer by mixing crushed Oreos and a bit of melted butter, and pressing the mixture into the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish.  Then mix together softened cream cheese, confectioners' sugar, and some Cool Whip.  Layer this up with chocolate pudding, more Cool Whip, and a sprinkling of crushed Oreos on top for one delicious dessert.

Taking advantage of instant chocolate pudding and prepared whipped topping to create its creamy layers, this no-bake dessert truly couldn't be any easier to make.

Chill the prepared dessert for at least eight hours, or overnight, to allow everything to meld together.

Then once the dessert has chilled, quick ... grab your fork!  Oh, and your glass of milk to go along with your Oreos ... you'll still need it.

Classic Oreo Icebox Dessert

Who doesn't love an Oreo? Well, they're even better in this classic Oreo Icebox Dessert, with creamy layers of Oreos, pudding, and whipped cream. Yum!
Prep time: 60 MinInactive time: 8 HourTotal time: 9 Hour

Ingredients

  • 1 (15 oz.) package Oreos, crushed
  • 6 T. butter, melted
  • 1 (8 oz.) package cream cheese, softened
  • 1 c. confectioners' sugar
  • 1 large (5.1 oz.) box instant chocolate pudding + milk to prepare, as specified on the pudding package
  • 1 large (16 oz.) container Cool Whip whipped topping

Instructions

  1. Set aside about 1/4 cup crushed Oreos. Mix remaining crushed Oreos with the melted butter. Press into the bottom of a 9x13" baking dish.
  2. Combine cream cheese and confectioners' sugar; mix well. Fold in 1/2 of the Cool Whip until well combined. Spread the cream cheese mixture over the crushed Oreo layer. Chill for 20 minutes.
  3. Prepare chocolate pudding according to package directions. Spread over cream cheese layer. Chill for 20 minutes.
  4. Spread remaining Cool Whip over the pudding layer. Sprinkle reserved crushed Oreos on top. Chill for 8 hours or overnight before serving.
TRACEY'S NOTES:
  1. You can use 1/3-less-fat Neufchatel cream cheese, sugar-free instant pudding (the ounces on the package will be less), and lite Cool Whip - and it will still taste delicious.

  23. My daughter hates cream cheese, I wonder what I could use instead.

    1. I haven't tried to substitute for the cream cheese, Tonia ... but a couple of options come to mind. 1. You could omit the cream cheese layer altogether. 2. You could try sour cream instead of cream cheese. 3. You could just increase the amount of Cool Whip and make the cream cheese layer just a Cool Whip layer ... though be careful spreading the pudding layer on top, because the layer below won't be as firm. Let me know if you give any of these modifications a try!

    2. Another option is to use either vanilla or butterscotch pudding and mix it with the cool whip. We have a similar recipe round these parts with a shortbread base called "sex in a pan". ; )

    3. You could use ricotta cheese and sweeten it the same way. I do this all the time.

  24. hi..i was wondering do you crush the whole oreo? filling included??

    ReplyDelete
  25. What size pan do you put this in?

    ReplyDelete
  26. For the pudding you have listed 1 large box ( 5.1 oz). I've only seen a 2.1 oz box. Was this a typo or do I need to double the boxes?

  27. Devilish layers indeed!!! And no, I've never met anyone who does't love Oreos! Can't wait for an occassion to make this!

  28. Hi, just wondering if anyone could help me so I don't mess this recipe up.

What do the T and c. stand for in the recipe, used here:

    6 T. butter, melted
    1 c. confectioners' sugar

I'm a Brit, so just need someone to make sure I don't mistranslate an American measurement! :) Looking forward to making this.

    1. T. is the abbreviation for tablespoon anc c. is the abbreviation for cup. Enjoy!

  29. I just made this for valentines day for the hubby. I used peanut butter oreos for the bottom ( he LOVES PB) and I used regular oreos for the crumble on top. This was so.darn.good. Awesome recipe. The pudding in the middle almost makes it taste like "french silk pie", and the touch of peanut butter is really yummy ( if you like that sort of thing!).

    Thanks!!!

  32. hi.heres a quick version......combine instant vanilla pudding with a tub of coolwhip....crumble one row of oreos in and fold...refrigerate...love both types:)

  33. Yum! I make a similar dessert and I call it chocolate lasagna (layers of chocolate and cream!)... Pinned again.

  34. I think I would leave out the Cool Whip...not crazy about it. And add a vanilla pudding layer. Yum!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Does this go in the freezer or refrigerator when you say chill for 8 hours?

    ReplyDelete
  36. I grew up making a similar recipe with a walnut/shortbread crust but have been wanting to try different crusts...this fit the bill perfectly! And it was amazing! However, I do use fresh whip cream and it brings it over the top in my opinion. For the 2nd cream cheese layer, I add about 2 Tbsp powder sugar and a bit of vanilla to 8oz whip cream. For the top layer, I'll do 16oz whip cream with about 1/4C powder sugar and some vanilla.
