You'll flip for this rich Black Forest Yum Yum! Two thick creamy layers
sandwich a layer of cherry pie filling and chocolate fudge pudding, all
sitting atop a no-bake Oreo crumb crust. Seriously, with this creamy
cherry and chocolate combination, what's not to love?
It's no secret our love for Yum Yum runs deep here at The Kitchen is My Playground. It's a love that began during my husband's childhood, starting back when his Nanny used to make him pans of ever-classic Cherry Yum Yum to enjoy. It's a dessert that always brings back fond memories of chats with Nanny, had over delicious plates of the creamy treat.
Our love for Yum Yum extends far beyond the most well-known cherry
variety. Whether it's
fresh strawberry Yum Yum, classic
blueberry Yum Yum, chocolatey
Oreo Yum Yum, or even
banana pudding Yum Yum, we just can't get enough of the stuff. And we love to play around
with creating different flavors of the creamy confection.
So it only made perfect sense to take Nanny's classic
Cherry Yum Yum recipe, add in chocolate, and change it up to create this super tasty, super creamy
Black Forest version of her beloved dessert. And it's a change-up that
indeed does not disappoint.
Two thick creamy layers sandwich a layer of cherry pie filling and chocolate fudge pudding, all sitting atop a no-bake Oreo crumb crust.
When it comes to desserts, Black Forest is the flavor combination of
chocolate, cherries, and whipped cream. It's usually enjoyed as classic
Black Forest cake -- which is made up of several layers of chocolate cake,
with whipped cream and cherries between each layer. This fabulous flavor
combination, however, lends itself very well to being enjoyed in many many
forms.
So to whip up a pan of Black Forest Yum Yum, we changed Nanny's original
graham cracker crust to an Oreo crust, added a layer of extra-thick chocolate
fudge pudding along with the cherries, and topped the pan with Oreo
crumbs. And voila! -- That classic Black Forest combination of
chocolate, cherries, and whipped cream came to life in creamy and delicious
Yum Yum form.
Black Forest Yum Yum Ingredients:
There are four components that come together when whipping up a pan of Black
Forest Yum Yum -- 1. a crust, 2. fluffy whipped cream layers, 3.
chocolate-cherry filling, and 4. a crumb topping. Let's take a look at
the ingredients needed for each one.
- Crust - Black Forest Yum Yum is built atop an Oreo crumb crust. All that's needed to make the crust are Oreos and melted butter.
- Fluffy whipped cream layers - Fluffy layers are the signature element of Yum Yum desserts. To create the creaminess you'll need cream cheese, powdered sugar, whipping cream, and vanilla extract. You can substitute an 8 ounce container of Cool Whip non-dairy whipped topping for the homemade whipped cream in this fluffy mixture if you'd like -- but we do much prefer it made with freshly-whipped cream.
- Chocolate-Cherry filling - Cherry pie filling and rich chocolate fudge pudding combine to create the signature Black Forest cherry-chocolate combination for this Yum Yum's filling. You'll need a 21-ounce can of cherry pie filling, a 3.4-ounce package of chocolate fudge instant pudding, and milk to create the filling layer. I buy the "premium" cherry pie filling so there are more cherries, but regular works just fine, too.
- Crumb topping - Oreo crumbs reserved from making the Yum Yum's crust create the dessert's chocolate crumb topping.
How to Make Black Forest Yum Yum:
When making a pan of no-bake Black Forest Yum Yum, start by preparing
the Oreo crust.
Crush Oreos into fine crumbs -- a food processor works fabulously for
this. Then combine the Oreo crumbs and melted butter, stirring
them with a fork until the crumbs are evenly moistened. Set
aside a few tablespoons of crumbs for the topping, and press the
remaining crumbs firmly into the bottom of a baking dish.
Set the crust aside, and prepare the Yum Yum's signature fluffy cream
cheese/whipped cream mixture.
Beat together softened cream cheese and powdered sugar until the
cream cheese is smooth. Then, whip heavy whipping cream together with a little powdered
sugar and vanilla extract to make whipped cream. Fold together the whipped cream and cream cheese mixture, and
you're good to go with the Yum Yum's fluffy deliciousness.
To assemble the Black Forest Yum Yum layers, spread a little less than half of the whipped cream mixture evenly over the
prepared Oreo crust.
Then, in a mixing bowl, whisk together chocolate fudge pudding mix
and some milk -- a little less than usually used to make the pudding
so it will be thicker than normal. Whisk it until the pudding
mixture is well combined and beginning to thicken. -- The mixture will
actually become quite thick.
Overnight chilling lets the layers come together so they can be cut nicely.
Spread the pudding evenly over the whipped cream layer.
Next drop the cherry pie filling by large spoonfuls on top of the
chocolate pudding layer, and gently spread the cherry filling to
connect the spoonfuls, evenly covering the pudding.
Top the cherry layer with the remaining whipped cream mixture. Gently
spread it evenly over the cherry layer, covering the cherry pie
filling completely.
To finish the Yum Yum off, sprinkle the top evenly with the Oreo crumbs reserved from making
the crust.
Cover and refrigerate the Yum Yum overnight before
serving.
Some Yum Yums are okay to cut and serve after chilling for just a few
hours, but overnight is best for this Black Forest Yum Yum. -- Overnight
chilling lets the layers come together so they can be cut
nicely.
Less time chilling = messy pieces when you serve it up. Messy
pieces still taste great, though!!
Chilling out for more than overnight is even better as far as "clean"
cuts go. As the layers continue to meld more and more over time,
the cutting gets nicer and nicer. But truly -- it's tough to wait
that long for this creamy deliciousness.
Once it's chilled and set, serve it up and dig in! You'll get the
fabulousness of chocolate, cherries, and cream in every bite.
So to enjoy that classic Black Forest combination of chocolate, cherries,
and whipped cream in creamy and delicious Yum Yum form, whip up a pan of
this no-bake Black Forest Yum Yum.
With its two thick creamy layers sandwiching a layer of cherry pie
filling and chocolate fudge pudding, all sitting atop a no-bake Oreo crumb
crust, what's not to love? It's one change-up of a classic recipe that sure does not
disappoint.
And we're happy to say we're sure Nanny would 100% approve.

No-Bake Black Forest Yum Yum
You'll flip for this rich Black Forest Yum Yum! Two thick creamy
layers sandwich a layer of cherry pie filling and chocolate fudge
pudding, all sitting atop a no-bake Oreo crumb crust. Seriously,
what's not to love?
Prep time: 30 Mininactive time: 8 HourTotal time: 8 H & 30 M
Ingredients
Crust:
- 1 1/2 c. finely crushed Oreos
- 3 T. unsalted butter, melted
Cream Cheese Mixture:
- 1 (8 oz.) package cream cheese, softened
- 1/2 c. confectioners' sugar
- 2 c. whipping cream
- 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
- 3 T. confectioners' sugar
Filling:
- 1 (21 oz.) can cherry pie filling
- 1 (3.4 oz.) package chocolate fudge instant pudding
- 1 1/2 c. milk
Instructions
Prepare the Crust:
- In a bowl, combine Oreo crumbs and melted butter. Blend with a fork until crumbs are moistened.
- Set aside 3 tablespoons of crumbs to sprinkle on the top.
- Firmly press crumb mixture into the bottom of a 9x9-inch pan that's been sprayed with non-stick cooking spray.
Prepare the Cream Cheese Mixture:
- With an electric mixer, cream together softened cream cheese and the 1/2 cup confectioners' sugar until smooth.
- In a separate bowl, whip the whipping cream, 3 tablespoons confectioners' sugar, and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form.
- By hand, mix together whipped cream and cream cheese mixture until well combined.
Assemble the Yum Yum Layers:
- Spread a little less than half the cream cheese/whipped cream mixture evenly over the crust.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together pudding mix and the 1 & 1/2 cups milk. Continue whisking until mixture is well combined and beginning to thicken. -- The mixture will become quite thick.
- Spread chocolate pudding evening over the cream cheese/whipped cream layer.
- Drop cherry pie filling by large spoonfuls on top of the chocolate pudding layer. Gently spread cherry pie filling evenly over the pudding.
- Top cherry layer with the remaining cream cheese/whipped cream mixture. Gently spread it evenly over the cherry layer, covering it completely.
- Sprinkle the top with the 3 tablespoons reserved Oreo crumbs.
- Cover and refrigerate overnight before serving.
TRACEY'S NOTES:
- I buy the "premium" cherry pie filling so there are more cherries in the Yum Yum cherry layer. Regular works just fine, too.
- 1/3-less fat cream cheese works just fine in this recipe.
- You can substitute an 8 ounce container of Cool Whip non-dairy whipped topping for the homemade whipped cream in the cream cheese mixture if you'd like.
- We like our Yum Yum and its layers thick! And that's just how this recipe turns out - nice, thick creamy layers. The pan will be VERY full right to the tippy-top.
- We recommend doubling the recipe for a 9x13" pan. You could "stretch" this recipe to a 9x13" pan, but the layers will be very thin (and you would probably need to double the crust portion for it to adequately cover the bottom of the pan).
