Enjoy the top 12 best recipes of 2017, as voted by readers' views. These 12 dishes are the reader favorites of the year from The Kitchen is My Playground's posts ~ And my oh my, what a tasty year it's been!
This year-end "best of" post is always my favorite post of the year to write. It's so fun to look back through the year's posts and see which ones have taken the top spots as your favorites ... and especially which recipe takes top-billing as the #1 most-viewed favorite. There are always a few surprises for me. I like to think I stay on top of what's popular on the blog, but there are always some recipes I didn't realize you liked so well!
Why 12 top best recipes, you ask? Isn't it usually a top 10 list at the end of the year? Yes, it is ... but it was way too hard for me to stop at 10! Some of your favorites were really close in numbers, so I decided to just go ahead and include two bonus posts and make it the top 12. A little extra deliciousness never hurts.

Thank you so much for reading The Kitchen is My Playground. I am humbled and blessed to have you all as readers. I'm looking forward to keeping the tried-and-true family-taste-tested recipes for the home cook coming in the new year.
From our family to yours, Happy New Year!
And now, here are your top 12 favorites from this past year:
12. Lemon White Chocolate Chip Cookies ~ These cookies are a tasty lemon-laced twist to your typical chocolate chip cookies. Our 7-year-old Little Miss H. and I loved these ... and coming in at the #12 spot, it appears you all did, too.
11. Hummingbird Sheet Cake ~ Loaded with banana and pineapple, this Hummingbird Sheet Cake with Caramel Cream Cheese Frosting is one amazingly delicious dessert! It's all the hummingbird deliciousness of the classic layer cake, in low-fuss sheet cake form. And with this landing in the top favorites of the year, it looks as though readers enjoy the low-fuss preparation of a sheet cake just as much as I do.
10. Homemade Vanilla Buttercream Frosting ~ Looks like we all love a classic, simple vanilla frosting! Believe me, this one's fluffy, creamy, and simply loaded with great vanilla flavor.
9. Turkey & Dressing Casserole ~ Looks as though we're all on the search for great ways to enjoy leftover turkey. This homey casserole packs all the great turkey and dressing flavors of Thanksgiving into one hearty dinner dish, and is one of our dinnertime favorites. We're glad to see you all liked it, too!
8. Santa's Hat Christmas Cocktail ~ This post took off like a shot! It wasn't posted until December 1st, but still managed to make it into the top 12 of the year ... with just a mere month to do it in. I thought this Christmas cocktail was absolutely adorable {and tasty!}, and I'm so glad you all did, too.
7. Beef Stroganoff Casserole ~ Loaded with ground beef, noodles, fresh sliced mushrooms, and a creamy beefy sauce, this comfort-food casserole is also loaded with great flavor the whole family will love. It was one of my favorites my Mom used to make when I was growing up. Not sure what took me so long to share it on the blog ... but I'm sure glad you all enjoyed it once I finally did.
6. How to Make the BEST Oatmeal Cookies ~ Who doesn't love a great oatmeal cookie? Coming in at the 6th spot, apparently you all have a soft spot for them like I do! These bring together the wonderful elements of great thickness, soft and chewy middles, great texture, and fantastic flavor. Whip up a batch today!
5. Basic Rolled Shortbread Cookies ~ I have to admit, this was one of the surprises of the year for me. I had no idea this recipe would be so popular! These tender, rich, buttery-flavored cookies stand great just as they are, or provide a wonderful canvas for added embellishments like a dip in chocolate or smear of frosting. Personally, I enjoy them best plain, just as they are.
4. Amish Macaroni Salad ~ Classic Amish macaroni salad is an old-timey favorite. With it coming in at the 4th spot for the year, apparently it's still beloved today!
3. Make-Ahead Layered Salad ~ When feeding a crowd, we all love to have a few tricks up our sleeve to make preparation easier, right? Make-Ahead Layered Salad is one of my favorite feed-a-crowd tricks ... and looks like you all like this trick, too. With make-ahead convenience and fabulous flavor, this salad is perfect for any kind of get-together.
2. Grandma's Christmas Punch ~ Here's another recipe that took off like a shot. Published the last week of November right after Thanksgiving, this punch didn't have a lot of time to gather steam for the year to make it into the top 12 ... and it's coming in at the #2 spot! What's more, Grandma's Christmas Punch was only about 2,000 views from taking over the #1 spot. Looks like Grandma's family-favorite punch is a big hit with all of you ... just like it is with our family. Grandma will be proud!
And coming in at the #1 spot as the most popular recipe for 2017 is ...
1. Old-Fashioned Banana Pudding from Scratch ~ We have a debate in our house as to which banana pudding is better - "regular" banana pudding, which is the made-with-instant-pudding and topped-with-Cool-Whip stuff we all encounter most of the time ... or "real" banana pudding, which is the old-timey made-from-scratch stuff. Looks like your votes making our from-scratch version the most popular recipe of the year on the blog may have just settled the debate forever!!
