Looking for a fun new twist on the ever-popular pigs in a blanket? Give Reuben Pigs In a Blanket a try!  Stuffed with the classic flavors of a Reuben sandwich, they're one tasty little snacking treat.

What exactly is a Reuben sandwich? Well, a Reuben is a classic grilled sandwich chock full with corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and Russian dressing served up on rye bread.  And it just so happens to be one of my all-time favorite sandwiches -- minus the rye bread, that is. I'm just not a fan at all of the caraway seeds in rye.

Loaded with sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, and that classic Reuben sauce, Reuben Pigs In a Blanket are one tasty little snacking treat.

But the rest of a Reuben's flavors? -- Love them.  It's a flavor combination that just goes so deliciously together.

And you know what? It's easy to recreate this super tasty Reuben flavor combination in a pig in a blanket.

Lit'l Smokies mini sausage links stand in for the sandwich's signature corned beef filling.  Then a smear of Russian or Thousand Island dressing, a pinch of sauerkraut, and a bit of Swiss cheese tucked inside the blanket bring on the classic Reuben taste.  Then finish the top with a small sprinkling of caraway seeds, if you'd like, to complete the round of traditional Reuben flavors.

It's a fun and flavorful twist on classic Pigs In a Blanket, for sure!

Reuben Pigs In a Blanket Ingredients:

Reuben Pigs In a Blanket are a fun and tasty flavor twist on the classic.  To whip up a batch, you'll need:

  • Hillshire Farm Lit'l Smokies or other mini hot dogs - It's not Pigs In a Blanket without the piggies! And these piggies stand in for the Reuben sandwich's signature corned beef filling.

  • Crescent Rolls - Crescent roll dough forms the blanket around each Lit'l Smokie link.

  • Russian or Thousand Island dressing - Serves as the Reuben-inspired sauce. Though a classic Reuben is made with Russian dressing, it can be harder to find than Thousand Island in grocery stores. Either type of dressing works and tastes great.

  • Sauerkraut - Another classic Reuben ingredient.  Be sure to thoroughly drain the kraut and pat it dry with a paper towel before assembling the pigs in a blanket.

  • Swiss cheese - The classic Reuben cheese.

  • Caraway and/or sesame seeds (optional) - Caraway seeds are traditional to the rye bread used to make Reubens. I do not care at all for caraway seeds, however, and sprinkle my Reuben Pigs In a Blanket with sesame seeds instead. Sprinkle the tops to suit your taste -- caraway seeds, sesame seeds, a mixture of both, or no seeds at all.

How to Make Reuben Pigs In a Blanket:

Reuben Pigs In a Blanket come together in the same manner as their traditional counterparts, just with the addition of a few ingredients tucked inside the blanket alongside the piggies.

Start by unrolling the crescent roll dough and separating it into triangles along the perforations. Cut each triangle through the point into two pieces, creating two long triangles from each.

Spread about 1/2 teaspoon Russian or Thousand Island dressing over the surface of each crescent dough piece.

Then sprinkle about 3/4 teaspoon each of sauerkraut and shredded Swiss cheese on the wide end of each crescent dough piece.

Place a Lit'l Smokie at the wide end of each dough triangle, setting it on top of the sauerkraut and cheese.

Starting at the wide end, roll each Lit'l Smokie up in the crescent dough, ending at the dough's tip. Each Lit'l Smokie should peek out a bit on both sides of the roll.

Caraway seeds are traditional to the rye bread used to make Reuben sandwiches, so make for a perfect decorative and flavor sprinkle on top of these pigs in a blanket.

However -- I do not care for caraway seeds at all.  I choose to sprinkle my Reuben Pigs In a Blanket with sesame seeds instead. Sprinkle the tops to suit your taste -- caraway seeds, sesame seeds, a mixture of both, or no seeds at all.

Sprinkle the tops to suit your taste - caraway seeds, sesame seeds, a mixture of both, or no seeds at all.

When sprinkling seeds on top, moisten the top of a roll with a very small amount of water.  Then immediately sprinkle with a few caraway and/or sesame seeds.  The seed sprinkling's got to be done pretty quickly before the water dries or the seeds won't stick.

I use my fingertips dipped in water to moisten the rolls.  You could also use a small pastry brush.

Place the rolls on a greased baking sheet and bake for about 15 minutes until they're golden brown.

Once baked, you're good to go in serving up their deliciousness.  Pop them on a platter or plate, and dig in to enjoy the Reuben deliciousness.

Loaded with sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, and that classic Reuben sauce, Reuben Pigs In a Blanket are a tasty way to recreate classic Reuben flavors in a fun new form. And believe me, they're certainly one tasty little snacking treat.

Ingredients

  • 1 (12 oz.) package Hillshire Farm Lit'l Smokies or other mini hot dogs
  • 2 tubes crescent rolls
  • about 1/3 to 1/2 c. Russian or Thousand Island dressing
  • about 1/2 c. sauerkraut, thoroughly drained & patted dry
  • about 1/2 c. shredded Swiss cheese
  • caraway and/or sesame seeds (optional)

Instructions

  1. Unroll crescent roll dough and separate the triangles. Cut each triangle (through the point) into two pieces, creating two long triangles from each.
  2. Spread about 1/2 teaspoon Russian or Thousand Island dressing over the surface of each crescent dough piece.
  3. Sprinkle about 3/4 teaspoon each of sauerkraut and shredded Swiss cheese on the wide end of each crescent dough piece. Place a Lit'l Smokie on top.
  4. Beginning at the wide end, roll each Lit'l Smokie up in the crescent dough, ending at the dough's tip. Each Lit'l Smokie should peek out a bit on both sides of the roll.
  5. If desired, moisten the top of each roll with a very small amount of water (I use my fingertips dipped in water), and immediately sprinkle with a few caraway and/or sesame seeds.
  6. Place rolls on a baking sheet greased with non-stick cooking spray.

TRACEY'S NOTES:
  1. There are about 35 to 40 links in each 12-ounce package of Lit'l Smokies, so the recipe amounts should work with a single package.
  2. Though a classic Reuben sandwich is made with Russian dressing, it can be harder to find than Thousand Island in grocery stores. Either type of dressing works and tastes great.
  3. Caraway seeds are traditional to the rye bread used to make Reubens. I do not care at all for caraway seeds, however, and sprinkle my Reuben Pigs In a Blanket with sesame seeds instead. Sprinkle the tops to suit your taste -- caraway seeds, sesame seeds, a mixture of both, or no seeds at all.
