To me, there's not much better than a homemade chocolate chip cookie.  Especially when that cookie is soft, tender, and warm straight from the oven.  Chocolate chip cookies are one of my absolute favorite sweet treats, for sure.

They're one of the first things I learned to bake on my own, too.  Which means I've certainly baked more than my fair share of the little beauties.

And while I love a straight-up basic chocolate chip cookie, I also love to play around with them and add in tasty mix-ins and flavors, too.  Like banana chocolate chip cookies, coffee chocolate chip cookies, and my very favorite cherry chocolate chip cookies.

Just like in the ever-popular chocolate covered pretzels, the classic sweet-salty combination of salt and chocolate join forces beautifully in these cookies.

So with as tasty as the classic combination of salt and chocolate is, I figured why not add pretzels to chocolate chip cookies?

Why not, indeed!

Just like in the ever-popular chocolate covered pretzels, the classic sweet-salty combination of salt and chocolate join forces beautifully in these cookies.

It's a chocolate chip cookie variation I'm very glad to have discovered.

Chocolate Chip Cookies with Pretzel Pieces Image

To make these tasty Pretzel Chocolate Chip Cookies, start by mixing up a traditional basic chocolate chip cookie dough.  I stick with the tried-and-true Nestle Tollhouse chocolate chip cookie dough batter, as you just can't go wrong with it.

Then, when you add in chocolate chips at the end of mixing up the cookie dough, also add in some coursely crushed pretzel pieces.

Do be gentle when crushing the pretzels.  They'll quickly and easily turn into pretzel dust!

To crush the pretzels, I place them in a zip-top baggie and gently tap them with a meat mallet.

You don't want to pulverize the pretzels, just break them into pieces.  So do be gentle when crushing the pretzels.  They'll quickly and easily turn into pretzel dust!

Adding pretzel dust to the cookie dough would be like adding more flour, and would change the texture of the baked cookies.  We want to add pretzel texture and flavor to the cookies ... not pretzel dust flour.

Once the chocolate chips and pretzel pieces are mixed into the cookie dough, drop the dough by rounded teaspoonfuls onto a cookie sheet.

Then sprinkle the top of each cookie with a small pinch of sea salt or fleur de sel finishing salt.

The salt sprinkling on top enhances the sweet-salty flavor combination in these scrumptious cookies, and is like the icing on the cake.

Fleur de sel is simply a specific type of sea salt gathered from an island in France.  It's got a very delicate salty flavor I love.

Just a small pinch will do to beautifully bring out the salty flavor of the cookies.

Either type of salt (sea salt or fleur de sel) works, but I do generally use fleur de sel when sprinkling salt on my baked goods.  Fleur de sel is simply a specific type of sea salt gathered from an island in France.  It's got a very delicate salty flavor I love.

Bake the cookies up until they're golden brown.

For soft chocolate chip cookies, my little trick is to slightly under-bake them.  I pull the cookies from the oven when they still look a little bit unset in the center.

If you like soft cookies, you may want to play around with yanking them out of the oven a little early to see how you like them.

  8. Just tried your chocolate chip and pretzel cookie recipe this afternoon. We had a break from the warm spell today with a lovely overcast sky which made it a perfect day for baking.
