I'll admit when this Lazy Lasagna recipe was first shared with me by a former coworker, I was skeptical. I mean, could something as easy as layering frozen cheese ravioli with prepared sauce and shredded cheese truly taste good? Would the frozen ravioli actually work to create lasagna-like layers? And if it works and is so good, dagnabbit, why hadn't I thought of it before?

Turns out, layering frozen ravioli with prepared sauce and cheese does indeed work to create one tasty dish. -- Proving my initial skepticism wrong. And admittedly while the layered result isn't quite as ooey-gooey and melty-cheesy as "regular" lasagna, Lazy Lasagna is sure one very easy and delicious stand-in.

Adored by grown-ups and kids alike, Lazy Lasagna's ease and quickness of prep, short ingredient list, and tasty result will quickly earn it a place in the weeknight dinner rotation. And rightfully so. -- Because though simple in its ingredients and prep, Lazy Lasagna is definitely not simple in its flavor.

Lazy Lasagna with Frozen Ravioli Ingredients:

It takes just 4 ingredients to make this tasty Lazy Lasagna. To whip up a pan, you'll need:

  • Frozen cheese ravioli - Easily create the lasagna layers with a large (30-ounce) bag of frozen cheese ravioli, found with the other frozen pastas in the freezer section of the grocery store. For variety, any flavor of frozen ravioli, such as spinach & cheese or beef, can be used in place of the cheese ravioli. However, we do not recommend using mini round ravioli as it does not do as well creating the same layered effect as does the larger ravioli.

  • Pasta sauce - Prepared jarred or canned pasta sauce makes Lazy Lasagna prep super quick and easy. -- Choose your favorite sauce. We use canned Hunt's Traditional Pasta Sauce.

  • Shredded Colby Jack cheese - Adds nice flavor to the lasagna's cheesy top. Pre-shredded is super convenient, or shred your own from a block if you prefer.

  • Shredded mozzarella cheese - Adds nice meltiness to the lasagna's cheesy top. Again, choose pre-shredded for extra convenience or shred your own from a block.

How to Make Lazy Lasagna with Frozen Ravioli:

Made with frozen ravioli as its base, Lazy Lasagna truly couldn't be any easier to make, taking all of about 15 minutes or less of hands-on prep time.

To get a pan started, first spray a 2-quart casserole dish or 11x7-inch baking pan with non-stick cooking spray. -- That pan size is important here, as the ingredient amounts in this recipe will not fill a 9x13-inch baking dish. (To make a 9x13-inch pan of lazy lasagna, I double the recipe ingredients.)

Microwave a bag of frozen ravioli for 1 minute, just to defrost them a little bit. This makes the ravioli easier to handle when creating the lasagna's layers and cuts down the lasagna's baking time just a bit.

Start creating the lasagna's layers by spreading about 1/4 cup of pasta sauce in the bottom of the pan. -- This helps keep the bottom layer of ravioli from sticking. Place 1/3 of the ravioli in a single layer on top of the sauce. Then spoon 1/3 of the pasta sauce evenly over the ravioli.

Repeat these ravioli/sauce layers 2 more times with the remaining ravioli and sauce. Then top everything with shredded cheese.

Pop the pan in the oven and bake uncovered for 40-45 minutes, until the lasagna is bubbly around the edges and the cheese is nicely melted.

Then you're ready to dive into the cheesy deliciousness! Cut the lasagna into squares and serve it up, revealing the cheesy layers created by the ravioli and its filling.

Though simple in its ingredients and prep, Lazy Lasagna is definitely not simple in its flavor. Which makes it a perfect family-friendly weeknight dinner choice.

Recipe FAQs:
  • Can I use a different flavor of ravioli, other than cheese ravioli, to make Lazy Lasagna? - Absolutely, yes! Lazy Lasagna can be made with any flavor of ravioli you'd like. -- For example, spinach & cheese or beef ravioli can be used in place of the cheese ravioli and each make for a very flavorful result. If using beef ravioli, you may want to add a sprinkling of cheese between each ravioli layer.

  • Do I need to boil the frozen ravioli before assembling Lazy Lasagna? - No, there's no need to boil the frozen ravioli before assembling the lasagna. -- And that's one of the (many) great beauties of this recipe! We do recommend microwaving the frozen ravioli for 1 minute in its bag, just to thaw it a little bit for easier handling. But there's absolutely no need to pre-boil.

  • Can you use fresh/non-frozen ravioli to make Lazy Lasagna, instead of the frozen ravioli? - Yes, you sure can use fresh ravioli instead of frozen. Just skip the step of microwaving the ravioli for 1 minute to partially thaw, and proceed with the rest of the recipe as-is.

  • Can I add meat to this Lazy Lasagna recipe? - Sure thing! Simply mix some cooked ground beef, ground turkey, or sausage into the sauce to add meat to the lasagna's layers. If you're really ambitious, simmer the cooked meat and sauce together for about 20 to 30 minutes to further enhance the flavor.

  • Can I make Lazy Lasagna with frozen ravioli in the crock pot? - Yes, Lazy Lasagna made with frozen ravioli can be made in the crock pot. Simply spray the inside of a crock pot with non-stick cooking spray, layer the ingredients as directed in the recipe in the crock pot, and cook on LOW for about 3-4 hours.
