Classic Oreo Balls are one chocolatey sweet treat that seems to be known and loved by all.  I mean, what's not to love about soft Oreo centers dipped in chocolate?  They're truly an Oreo and chocolate lover's dream.

So naturally, that chocolatey Oreo goodness is perfect to pair with cherries.  And believe me, it's a pairing that works simply beautifully.

In this mash-up of chocolate covered cherries and classic Oreo Balls, a soft chocolate mixture of crushed Oreos and cream cheese wraps around sweet maraschino cherries. The combo is then dunked in chocolate and decorated with a little white chocolate drizzle, creating a totally tasty treat that doesn't just taste fantastic, but is beautiful too.

And from one chocolate covered cherry lover to another, I can vouch if you love cherry chocolates you'll love these Cherry Oreo Balls, too.

They're a perfect treat for Valentine's Day, Christmas cookie trays, and gifting.  But hey, we certainly won't judge if you want to whip up a batch and keep them all to yourself.

Cherry Oreo Balls Ingredients:

It takes just 6 simple ingredients to whip up a batch of Cherry Oreo Balls.  You'll need:

  • Oreos - A standard 14.3-ounce package of Oreo cookies yields about 40 Cherry Oreo Balls.  Use regular Oreos, rather than double-stuffed or other varieties, for the best result.

  • Cream cheese - Serves as the binder for the crushed Oreo crumbs and creates the soft chocolatey dough.

  • Maraschino cherries - The star inside the chocolatey goodness. Use jarred maraschino cherries without stems, and drain them well.

  • Chocolate almond bark coating or chocolate candy melts - I usually use Plymouth Pantry brand chocolate flavored almond bark coating, available in the baking aisle of most grocery stores.  If I use candy melts, it's usually Make 'n Mold chocolate flavored candy wafers, available at most craft stores. I do find the chocolate almond bark coating a bit easier to work with.

  • Shortening (such as Crisco) - Adding just a small touch of shortening to the chocolate coating or candy melts thins it a bit and helps more easily create a nice, smooth coating on the finished Cherry Oreo Balls.

How to Make Cherry Oreo Balls:

These Cherry Oreo Balls are actually pretty easy to make.  Yes, admittedly, these no-bake little bites may be a tad bit time consuming to pull together.  But none of the individual steps are difficult.

Start by making the super easy chocolate Oreo mixture.  Simply crush up a package of Oreos into fine crumbs and then mix the crumbs with a package of softened cream cheese.  That's it.  Really.

And if you use a food processor for crushing the Oreos? -- You're done making the filling in about 2 minutes flat.

Scoop about 1-tablespoon portions of the Oreo mixture and use your hands to shape the Oreo mixture into approximately 1" balls.  A small 1-tablespoon cookie scoop works very well for this and helps keep the Oreo balls all close to the same size.

Press to flatten each ball, and then place a maraschino cherry in the center of each

Wrap the Oreo mixture around the cherry to completely enclose it in chocolate.  Use your hands to gently reshape the chocolate-covered cherry into a ball, if needed.

Melt your chosen chocolate coating together with a little bit of shortening -- the shortening makes the melted chocolate a littler easier to work with and helps create a smooth finish.

Then use a fork to dip the Cherry Oreo Balls in the melted chocolate coating, letting excess coating drip off back into the bowl.

Place the chocolate-coated balls on a baking sheet lined with wax paper or parchment paper and allow them to stand to let the coating to set. Or for quicker setting, chill the dipped balls for about 15 minutes until the chocolate is set.

If you have a lot of excess chocolate pooling around the bottom of a dipped ball, run a toothpick through the pooled chocolate close to the bottom of the Oreo ball before the chocolate is fully set. This "breaks off" that pooling, and allows it to easily and cleanly separate away from the Oreo ball once the chocolate is set.

For the decorative drizzle, melt together white chocolate and 1 teaspoon shortening in a zip-top sandwich bag.

Then using scissors, snip a very tiny hole in one corner of the sandwich bag

Move your hand back and forth to drizzle the melted white chocolate over the chocolate-dipped Cherry Oreo balls.

Let the Cherry Oreo Balls stand until the drizzled coating is firm.
Then store the finished balls in an airtight container in the refrigerator or freezer.  As you place them in their storage container, snap off any hanging/lingering stray drizzle stripes with your fingers.

And that's all there is to it!  As I said before, perhaps a tad bit time consuming to shape and dunk all the balls -- But not at all difficult.

Oreo Balls:
Decorative White Chocolate Drizzle:

Instructions

For the Oreo Balls:
  1. Finely crush Oreos -- a food processor works very well for this. Add softened cream cheese to the Oreo crumbs. Stir until no streaks of cream cheese are visible and the mixture is very well combined. Place mixture in the freezer for about 10 minutes to chill.
  2. Shape Oreo mixture into approximately 1" balls, using 1 tablespoon mixture per ball (a tablespoon cookie scoop works well for this).  Press to flatten each ball; place a maraschino cherry in the center of each and wrap Oreo mixture around it to completely enclose the cherry.  Reshape into a ball, if needed.
  3. Set balls aside on a baking sheet lined with wax paper or parchment paper. Cover baking sheet with plastic wrap and refrigerate balls for about 1 hour (or place in freezer for about 15 minutes).
  4. In a small deep bowl, melt candy melts (or almond bark coating) and shortening together in the microwave per candy melt package directions (typically in 30 second intervals, stirring in between).
  5. Use a fork to dip each Oreo ball in the candy coating, letting excess coating drip off back into the bowl. Place on a baking sheet lined with wax paper or parchment paper.
  6. Let dipped balls stand to allow coating to set. Or for quicker setting, chill the dipped Oreo balls until the chocolate is set, about 15 minutes.
For the White Chocolate Decorative Drizzle:
  1. Place white chocolate (chopped into small pieces, if using a block) and 1 teaspoon shortening in a zip-top sandwich bag on a microwave safe dish. Heat in 15 second intervals in the microwave until melted, kneading after each heating.
  2. Using scissors, snip a very tiny hole in one corner of the bag. The smaller your cut, the thinner the drizzle.
  3. Drizzle the melted candy coating back and forth over the chocolate-dipped Oreo balls.
  4. Let stand until drizzled coating is firm.
  5. Store Oreo balls in the refrigerator.
TRACEY'S NOTES:
  1. *I usually use Make 'n Mold dark chocolate flavored candy wafers, available at most craft stores. Or, Plymouth Pantry brand chocolate flavored almond bark coating, available in the baking aisle of most grocery stores.
  2. I use a small tablespoon cookie scoop to scoop out the Oreo mixture for each ball. This helps keep my Oreo balls all pretty close to the same size.
  3. See my post How to Melt Chocolate: On the Stove & In the Microwave for helpful tips on melting chocolate.
