Brown Sugar Baked Peaches ~a Health(ier) Sweet Treat

August 1, 2022
Brown Sugar Baked Peaches make for a scrumptious -- and low-calorie -- sweet treat dessert. Baked up soft and tender, these peaches are so good you certainly won't miss the calories!

Brown Sugar Baked Peaches on Dessert Plate Image

There's just not much better than a fresh summer peach. Unless it's a fresh summer baked peach. -- With some brown sugar and a touch of cinnamon sprinkled on top, that is.

It's the height of peach season in our neck of the woods, and we sure love fresh peaches. We eat a lot of our peaches "straight up," just cutting them into big juicy pieces and popping them in our mouths. And we love to enjoy baked desserts with them, too. But, this time around I didn't feel like making our usual favorite baked peach treats - brandied peach cobbler or super delicious peach dumplings made with crescent rolls. So, I whipped up these super delicious Brown Sugar Baked Peaches for dessert instead.

Well, let me tell you these baked fresh peaches do not disappoint. -- Especially if you're looking for a lower-calorie sweet treat. One whole peach comes in at the range of 95-120 calories, which really is in the lower calorie range as far as desserts go. And the juicy peaches combine with brown sugar and cinnamon to deliver up amazing flavor in every bite. So good, you sure won't miss those calories!

Baked up soft and tender, and served warm, Brown Sugar Baked Peaches are one tasty comfort food summer dessert, for sure.

Warm peach, brown sugar, and cinnamon combine to deliver up fabulous flavor in every bite.

What's to Love About This Recipe?

  • Just 4 ingredients - It takes just 4 simple ingredients to whip up a batch of Brown Sugar Baked Peaches. And hey, two of those ingredients are -- you guessed it, -- brown sugar and peaches.
  • Easy - Simply split fresh peaches in half, fill the cavities with a bit of butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon, and bake. It's truly as easy as that.
  • Low calorie sweet treat - Depending on the size of the peaches and amount of brown sugar you use, these come in at a range of 95-120 calories per peach. So, we'll just say you can have all this peach deliciousness for just about 100 calories per peach. Score!
  • Fabulous flavor - Warm peach, brown sugar, and cinnamon combine to deliver up fabulous flavor in every bite.
  • Great recipe for fresh peaches - Soft, juicy, and served up warm, Brown Sugar Baked Peaches are a great comfort food recipe for enjoying those fresh summer peaches.

Brown Sugar Baked Peaches Ingredients:

It takes only 4 ingredients to make these tasty Brown Sugar Baked Peaches. To whip up a batch, you'll need:

  • Fresh peaches - The star of the dish! Choose freestone peaches, those for which the pit will easily separate from the fruit when cut in half, for this recipe. Freestone peaches create a nice hollow in the center when halved, working perfectly to hold the butter and brown sugar for baking. (Cling peaches, on the other hand, have fruit that does not fall away from the pit, making it difficult to cut them into nice halves to bake as described in this recipe.) Look for freestone peaches that are on the firmer side, rather than super soft, for the best and easiest result. Freestone peaches are available later in the peach season, typically mid-June to mid-August.

  • Butter - A small bit of butter brings richness to the baked peaches, and combines with the peach juices and brown sugar to make a tasty "sauce" that bastes the peaches as they bake. We use unsalted butter, but salted works as well, if you prefer.

  • Brown sugar - Brings nice sweetness to the finished baked peaches.

  • Cinnamon - A small sprinkling of ground cinnamon combines with the brown sugar and warm peaches to create fabulous flavor.

How to Make Brown Sugar Baked Peaches:

Whipping up a batch of Brown Sugar Baked Peaches truly couldn't be any easier.

All you do to pull these together is slice some fresh peaches in half, remove the pit, and place them in a baking dish with the cut side up. Then, in the hollow of each peach half, put 1/2 teaspoon of butter and 1 or 2 teaspoons of brown sugar. -- Choose the amount of brown sugar based on your sweetness preference.

Then give the peach halves a little sprinkling of ground cinnamon.

Pop the peaches in the oven and bake them up until the peaches are soft, tender, and juicy and the butter and brown sugar are all melty together.

Then serve these little beauties up warm straight from the oven.

For a little extra decadence, add a dollop of whipped cream or creme fraiche on the side. -- They're oh, so good.  And at just around 100 calories (even with the extra dollop if you use Cool Whip Lite), Brown Sugar Baked Peaches are a beautiful and delicious health(ier) sweet treat dessert!

  23. BEEN DOING THESE ON THE GRILL FOR YEARS...
SAME PREP, ADD A SLICE OF POUND CAKE TO THE CUT SIDE OF THE PEACH.
    WRAP WELL IN FOIL,
WHEN YOU TAKE THE MAIN COURSE OFF THE GRILL.
PLACE ON THE GRILL PEACH SIDE DOWN.
COOK OVER LOWISH HEAT WHILE YOU EAT,
TURN OVER, CAKE SIDE DOWN, FOR THE LAST 3-5 MIN.
UNWRAP AND ADD A SCOOP OF VANILLA ICE CREAM.
    TO DIE FOR!

  25. These were very tasty, recipe was easy to follow and everything worked. Cutting in half and removing the pit was tricky. Half could be 2 directions. I cut the peach around the center, not from the stem and around the tail, then followed the seed until it would break free. Thanks for the good pics.

  27. My son and I picked lots of peaches yesterday at a local farm, and some were so ripe I had to figure out what to do with them quick (other than eating them plain -- too many for that). After running a Google search on "what to do with extra peaches," I came upon your wonderfully simple recipe!

My son (who's six) helped prepare the peaches with the butter and brown sugar. So delicious! Even my husband, not a big peach fan, liked the results. This one's a keeper. Thanks so much!

  39. What I love about this recipe (apart from taste) is its versatility - you can use other fruits instead of peaches and you can also add in spices or honey to give them an extra zing

  40. Would substituting butter with olive oil work? I'm careful with saturated fats

    ReplyDelete

    1. Sure, you can use olive oil instead of butter. The flavor will change, accordingly, with the substitution.

  42. What's your take on coconut oil? I.e. using natural organic coconut oil instead of butter? I try to stay away from dairy and have been doing most of my cooking with coconut oil instead. I also use peanut oil sometimes but I don't think it's the healthiest choice either. Plus the taste does not go with anything.

  43. Made these last night and they are so good! Just had another warmed up in the microwave and still delicious! I added a little ginger along with the cinnamon just to add more spice.
