Chocolate Sauce or Chocolate Syrup?
The recipe shared in this post is a creamy homemade chocolate sauce, not a chocolate syrup. So, what's the difference, you ask?
Well, chocolate syrup is typically a thinner consistency mixture made mostly with chocolate and water (+ some form of sweetener). -- Syrup doesn't contain additional fats from ingredients like milk, cream, or butter.
Chocolate sauce, on the other hand, is a thicker consistency mixture typically made with the addition of cream, milk, or butter. Chocolate sauce is usually richer and creamier in texture and flavor than chocolate syrup. The recipe shared in this post is a creamy homemade chocolate sauce, made with both evaporated milk and butter.

Homemade Chocolate Sauce Ingredients:
It takes just 4 simple ingredients to make homemade Chocolate Sauce. To whip up a batch, you'll need:
- Semi-sweet chocolate chips - Serve as the base of the sauce, creating a deep rich chocolate flavor. While we love the flavor with semi-sweet chips, milk chocolate chips could be substituted if you prefer.
- Evaporated milk - The chocolate sauce's dairy component, producing a creamy-textured drizzle-able consistency.
- Powdered sugar - Also known as confectioners' sugar, this super-fine sugar serves as the chocolate sauce's sweetener. It creates a smoother sauce than standard granulated sugar, so we do not recommend substituting.
- Butter - Unsalted butter adds richness, and helps create a silky texture in the finished chocolate sauce.
How to Make Homemade Chocolate Sauce:
Making homemade chocolate sauce is amazingly easy, -- and probably way easier than you think.
To get a batch started, place some butter, chocolate chips, powdered sugar, and evaporated milk together in a saucepan. Melt the ingredients together, stirring frequently, over medium-low heat.
Once everything's melted, reduce the heat to low and cook the chocolate sauce, stirring it constantly, until it's thickened just a bit. This will take about 5 to 7 minutes. At this point, as you see in the photo below, the chocolate sauce will cling to and coat a spatula, but will still be relatively thin and easily run off it.
Remove the chocolate sauce from the heat and set it aside to cool to room temperature. I like to pour it out of the saucepan and into a bowl, as this helps it cool a little more quickly.
As the homemade chocolate sauce cools to room temperature, it will continue to thicken.
After the chocolate sauce has cooled to room temperature, transfer it to a sealable jar or airtight plastic container and refrigerate it to chill. The chocolate sauce will continue to thicken even more as it chills.
Once chilled, you're good to go with enjoying its rich, chocolatey deliciousness. With its thick, creamy texture and fabulous chocolate flavor, it's simply perfect for drizzling over your next bowl of ice cream.
Recipe FAQs:

- Is it better to make homemade chocolate sauce with cocoa powder or with chocolate chips? - Many homemade chocolate "sauce" recipes call for using cocoa powder as the chocolate element of the sauce, instead of the chocolate chips we use as our chocolate sauce's base. However, cocoa powder as a chocolate base produces more of a thinner-consistency chocolate syrup than a thicker-consistency chocolate sauce. For a thick and creamy chocolate sauce, we recommend using chocolate chips as the chocolate base.
- Does homemade chocolate sauce need to be stored in the refrigerator? - Yes, since it is a dairy-based sauce made with evaporated milk and butter, homemade chocolate sauce should be stored in the refrigerator.
- How long does homemade chocolate sauce keep? - Stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator, homemade chocolate sauce keeps for up to 2 weeks.
- Can I serve homemade chocolate sauce warm? - Yes, you sure can serve homemade chocolate sauce warm if you'd like. When first made, simply cool the chocolate sauce to your desired temperature and serve. Or after it's been chilled, just warm a little bit of the homemade chocolate sauce up in the microwave for a few seconds before serving.
