One of the best parts of making chocolate chip cookies is eating the dough. -- And I'll admit I've snitched on raw cookie dough for years. Unfortunately, raw cookie dough isn't truly safe to eat. Because of the uncooked eggs and raw flour in the dough, you do run the risk of experiencing food poisoning whenever you grab those gobs of delicious unbaked dough. It's sad, -- but true.

But for raw dough lovers like me, there's a solution. -- Make edible raw chocolate chip cookie dough! And let me just say, it's a pretty easy solution, at that.

Made with heat-treated flour and no eggs, this version of chocolate chip cookie dough is safe to enjoy raw. In fact, it's specifically made for just that.

Edible Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough's got all that fabulous cookie dough flavor we crave!

We all generally understand that it can be unsafe to consume raw eggs. But why do you have to heat treat the flour to make safely edible raw cookie dough?

Well, because though we often don't think of flour as a raw product, it is. As packaged, flour hasn't been treated to kill germs and bacteria that can cause food poisoning. -- Germs and bacteria can contaminate the grain used to make flour while it's still in the field, or while the flour's being made. Without heat-treating, flour is not truly safe for consumption in unbaked treats. Fortunately, heat treating flour is a very easy thing to do by simply baking flour in the oven for about 8 minutes.

Once the flour is heat treated, then you just whip up a basic chocolate chip cookie dough, substituting water as the dough's moisture instead of eggs, to create a safely edible raw version. And believe me, edible Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough's got all that fabulous cookie dough flavor we crave!

Edible Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ingredients:

Basic chocolate chip cookie ingredients, minus the eggs, is all it takes to make edible chocolate chip cookie dough. To whip up a batch, you'll need:

  • Butter - As with chocolate chip cookie dough for baking, butter serves as the creamy foundation of this edible raw version of cookie dough, as well. Choose unsalted butter, or omit the recipe's additional salt if using salted butter.

  • Brown sugar - Helps create that signature chocolate chip cookie taste in this edible dough. As with regular chocolate chip cookies, use light brown sugar to recreate their characteristic flavor.

  • Granulated sugar - Along with the recipe's brown sugar, further sweetens the dough.

  • Water - Serves as the moisture element to bring the cookie dough together. Water replaces cookie dough's usual eggs, and thereby creates an eggless chocolate chip cookie dough version that's safe to eat raw.

  • Vanilla extract - A traditional chocolate chip cookie flavoring. Choose 100% pure vanilla extract, rather than imitation, for the best flavor result.

  • Flour - Just as in baked chocolate chip cookies, all-purpose flour creates the structure and bulk of the dough. To make it safe for eating in the raw cookie dough, heat-treat the flour by baking it in the oven before adding it to the dough mixture. Though we often don't think of flour as a raw food, it is. As packaged, flour hasn't been treated to kill germs and bacteria that can cause food poisoning. -- These germs and bacteria can contaminate the grain used to make flour while it's still in the field or while the flour's being made. Without heat-treating, flour is not safe for consumption in unbaked treats.

  • Salt - Enhances the flavor of the dough, and nicely balances out its sweetness.

  • Mini chocolate chips - We love the texture of this cookie dough made with mini chocolate chips. However, regular-sized semi-sweet chocolate chips can be used just fine, as well.

How to Make Edible Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough:

Edible Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough is super easy to make. You do just need to make sure to heat treat the flour to make it safe for consumption in the unbaked, raw dough. (And leave out the usual eggs in the dough, of course!)

To heat treat the flour, line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment or foil. Spread the flour in a thin layer in the lined baking sheet, and then bake it at 350℉ for 8 minutes. -- Watch the flour closely as it bakes, as you don't want the flour to brown. If it begins to brown in any areas, remove the flour from the oven.

Then, just set the flour aside to cool and proceed with the remainder of the recipe.

Combine the cooled heat-treated flour with some salt, stirring the mixture with a fork or whisk to break up any clumps of flour. Then beat the flour-salt mixture into the butter mixture until the dough is well combined.
