Guacamole doesn't have to be complicated to taste amazing. In fact, I firmly
believe when it comes to great guacamole, keeping it simple is best. Which is
exactly why this easy 3-ingredient guacamole recipe is my go-to. Loaded simply
with avocados, a little chopped tomato, and a generous helping of fresh lime
juice, it's also loaded with fabulous flavor.
Add in the fact it takes all of 10 minutes or less to make? -- And you've
truly got yourself one winner of a homemade guacamole recipe. Just a tiny bit
of chopping, some mashing with a fork, and all of a few minutes of time is all
it takes to whip up a bowl of this uncomplicated guacamole deliciousness.
Now, a funny little story to share. -- I remember well the first time I made
(or I should say, attempted to make) guacamole. I was 15 years old and
decided, along with a friend, to make a Mexican dinner for my family. --
Complete with said friend and I planning the whole menu, doing the grocery
shopping for the ingredients, and all the cooking and prep. My Mom was to do
nothing except drive us to and from the store (and well, pay for the
groceries, of course.) We were so proud of ourselves for taking this on!

Even all these years later, I distinctly remember standing in the grocery
store produce section picking out the avocadoes for our guacamole. Why do I
remember this so well? -- Because neither my friend nor I had ever bought
avocadoes before. And we had absolutely no idea what we were doing.
I recall us debating there in the aisle -- How do you know if an avocado is
ripe? Are they supposed to be hard? Or, are they supposed to be soft? Which
are we supposed to choose? -- Somehow deciding in that moment of debate and
avocado prodding that soft avocadoes must be going bad, we decided to buy the
hardest avocados we could find.
Probably needless to say, there was no bowl of homemade guacamole to accompany
our Mexican dinner that night, having learned the hard way (pun intended!)
that softened avocadoes are the way to go. And looking back on that memory
still makes me laugh to this day.

whip up a bowl, you'll need:
- Avocados - Guacamole's star ingredient! Choose avocados that give just a little when gently pressed on the outside. -- These avocados are perfectly ripe. If there is no give when pressed, the avocado is not yet ripe, and will be hard and flavorless. If there is a lot of give and the avocado is very soft, it may be overripe with a bit of an "off" flavor.
- Chopped tomato - A bit of chopped fresh tomato contributes flavor and texture to the finished guacamole.
- Fresh lime juice - The key ingredient that brings amazing and fresh flavor to the guacamole. Fresh lime juice also adds acid that helps prevent the guacamole from turning color.
- Salt & pepper - Traditionally not counted as an ingredient in dishes (and thus making this a 3-ingredient recipe), a little salt and pepper nicely seasons and enhances the flavors of the guacamole.
How to Make 3-Ingredient Guacamole:
Whipping up a bowl of fabulously fresh homemade guacamole truly
couldn't be any easier, and takes all of about 10 minutes or less.
Get started by cutting a couple of avocados in half, removing the
pit, and scooping out the flesh with a spoon. Place the avocado flesh
in a small mixing bowl along with some finely chopped tomato. (Truly,
the most time consuming part of this recipe is chopping the
tomato.)
Mash the avocado and tomato together with a fork until they're just
combined. -- The avocado should still be a little chunky.
Add in fresh lime juice and a little salt and pepper, then stir to
get everything combined.
Then you're good to go with enjoying the homemade guacamole
deliciousness! That's really all it takes. Truly easy, right?
Serve the guacamole immediately. -- And truth be told, guacamole is
at its best when enjoyed right after it's made. But if need be, it can
be stored in the refrigerator for 2-3 hours before serving.
To store fresh-made guacamole in the refrigerator for a couple of
hours before serving, cover it with plastic wrap and press the plastic
wrap directly onto the guacamole's surface to prevent air from
reaching it. (Through a process called oxidation, oxygen in the air
will turn the guacamole brownish over time). Place the guacamole in
the refrigerator until you're ready to enjoy.
