sharp cheddar filling, Guacamole Grilled Cheese comes together in a
flash to deliver up truly amazing flavor.
Until recently, I've always just made your straight-up, regular-old grilled
cheese. -- And loved it. I never really gave much thought to changing it up, or thought there
could be so many amazing-sounding combinations.
Then, I started seeing all
these fabulously different grilled cheese variations popping up all over
the place. And I decided it was time to start giving some new things a try.
The surprisingly delicious combination of guacamole and cheddar make for one great grilled cheese, indeed!
When it came to this Guacamole Grilled Cheese, admittedly I was skeptical. But I was also so intrigued by the thought of guacamole in a grilled cheese that I just had to give it a try. Turns out, the combination of guacamole and cheddar is really yummy!
Guacamole Grilled Cheese's filling is a very simple guacamole that you whip up yourself, paired with sharp cheddar cheese. The tang of the guacamole's fresh lime juice with the sharp cheddar is an unexpectedly wonderful and truly delicious flavor combination. So delicious in fact, this is now one of my absolute favorite grilled cheese sandwiches to make.
So while it may seem like a strange combination, Guacamole Grilled Cheese is sure one surprisingly great grilled cheese that will no doubt keep you coming back to it again and again.
Guacamole Grilled Cheese Ingredients:
It doesn't take a ton of ingredients to whip up a tasty Guacamole Grilled
Cheese. For the super-quick homemade guacamole, you'll need:
- An avocado - Choose an avocado that gives just a little when gently pressed on the outside. -- These avocados are perfectly ripe and great for making guacamole.
- Chopped tomato - Contributes nice flavor and texture to the grilled cheese's finished guacamole spread.
- Fresh lime juice - Brings amazing fresh flavor to the guacamole, and also adds acid that helps prevent the guacamole from turning color.
- Tabasco sauce (optional) - If you like things on the spicy side, add a few drops of Tabasco sauce to the guacamole. The bit of spice is a wonderful complement to the sandwich's creamy avocado and melty cheddar cheese.
- Salt & pepper - A small touch of salt and pepper nicely seasons and enhances the flavors of the guacamole.
For the remaining sandwich components, you'll need:
- Good quality bread - We recommend choosing a crusty boule or loaf of sourdough from the grocery store bakery.
- Sharp cheddar cheese - Choose a sharp cheddar that you cut from the block yourself, rather than pre-sliced, as it melts more readily and has a creamier melted texture. We use Cabot extra sharp.
- Butter - Creates that beautifully golden-brown grilled texture on the bread.
How to Make a Guacamole Grilled Cheese:
A Guacamole Grilled Cheese comes together in a flash to deliver up
its truly amazing flavor.
Start by mixing up a really quick and simple guacamole. Just mash together an avocado and some chopped tomato in a small bowl, and then hit it with some fresh lime juice and a small bit of salt and pepper. If you like things on the spicy side, add in a few drops of Tabasco sauce.
See, super simple!
Layer the guacamole with some delicious sharp cheddar cheese on slices of a nice sourdough bread or crusty boule from the grocery store bakery. We use Cabot, Vermont extra sharp cheddar -- it's our favorite. (Full disclosure -- as a native Vermonter, I use Cabot cheese whenever I can! And, nope, Cabot does not pay me to say this.)
Pop the top slice of bread on over the cheese slices, and then grill it on up until both sides are a nice golden brown.

ReplyDeleteI love avocados. So much I might turn green. So this? Oh man, I need it tomorrow for lunch!
ReplyDeleteAwesome sandwich! I never would have thought to use my gaucamole in my grilled cheese. This may be one of my new addictions!
ReplyDeleteUntil recently I didn't care for avocados but Dr Oz said how good they were for you so I have been eating. I don't like cilantro either but see your recipe doesn't have it so I may have to give this sandwich a try. It would go well with my Mango Salsa.
