Color some vodka black and whip up this cute and creepy
Spider's Kiss Cocktail for Halloween! While it adds a perfect touch of
fun and creepiness to the Halloween festivities, it's also super easy to
make.
Cocktails may just be my favorite Halloween-themed treats to make.
Like our
Dracula's Blood
and
Bloody Sunrise, Halloween cocktails are just so fun and so easy to make. The cute
and creepy possibilities are seemingly endless.
And the newest addition to our Halloween cocktails line-up is this Spider's
Kiss cocktail, featuring black vodka and black shoestring licorice legs.
It's just the right combination of cute and creepy to add to your Halloween
festivities!
But wait. -- Black vodka?
Yes, black vodka! The signature spider-black hue of this cocktail is indeed created with black vodka.
While there is one brand of commercially made black-colored vodka available at liquor stores (Blavod brand), black vodka is something that's totally easy to make on your own. And making your own isn't just easy, it's also less expensive, too.
A Spider's Kiss Cocktail is just the right combination of cute and creepy to add to your Halloween festivities!
How Do You Make Black Vodka?
The steps for how to make black vodka are ridiculously easy. You can use any brand of regular vodka you'd like. -- As long it's a clear liquid, it'll work. Even clear flavored vodkas can be colored black.
To make a bottle of black vodka, you need:
- a 750 ml bottle of regular clear vodka, any brand you like will do
- 10 drops blue food coloring
- 10 drops red food coloring, and
- 8 drops green food coloring
Carefully drop the food coloring into your bottle of vodka, taking care to only drop the specified number of drops of each color. Keeping the ratio of the colors is important to create a true black liquid.
Then, place the cap back on the vodka bottle and give it a good shake until everything is well mixed. The vodka will turn a deep, dark black -- just perfect for creating this Spider's Kiss and other fun Halloween vodka cocktails.
If you don't want to color an entire bottle of vodka black, that's no problem. Just adjust the number of food coloring drops accordingly to the amount of your liquid, keeping the 10 blue/10 red/8 green ratio.
So for example, to color 1/2 of a 750 ml bottle of vodka, use just 5 drops blue, 5 drops red, and 4 drops of green.
As a side note, I have also used black food coloring (available at most craft stores or for online order) to color the vodka, and prefer the blue/red/green food coloring combination. Black food coloring had a bit of a purple tint to it in the cocktail, whereas the blue/red/green combination came out more true-black.
Spider's Kiss Cocktail Ingredients
It takes just four ingredients to whip up a fun and tasty Spider's Kiss cocktail.
For each cocktail, you'll need:
- Cranberry juice - Forms the tart juice base of the cocktail.
- Grenadine - A splash of grenadine adds sweetness to the drink. Grenadine is a sweet bright red syrup made from pomegranates. Find it in a small bottle in the drink mixers section at the grocery store, or order grenadine online from Amazon.
- Black vodka - Forms the liquor base of the cocktail. Purchase Blavod brand black vodka at your local liquor store, or easily (and less expensively!) create your own with regular clear vodka and food coloring.
- Black shoestring licorice - Strands of this thin licorice are used to create the cocktail's fun spider leg garnish.
How to Make a Spider's Kiss Cocktail
Once you've got your black vodka mixed up (as talked about previously in this post), you're good to go with whipping up a tasty Spider's Kiss.
For each cocktail you'll be making, grab a martini glass and pour in 2 & 1/2 ounces of chilled cranberry juice. You won't be shaking this cocktail with ice or adding ice to the glass, so do be sure the juice is chilled so the cocktails will be cold.
Then add a splash of grenadine to the glass. There's no need to give this a stir, -- the two will mix together just fine on their own.
Then over the back of a spoon, slowly pour 2 ounces of chilled black vodka into the glass.
Pouring the vodka over a spoon helps it land gently, creating a layer of vodka that floats on top of the cranberry juice mixture. It'll give you a little bit of a layered effect, with the red of the juices peeking through at the bottom of the cocktail.
Then grab some 4-inch pieces of black shoestring licorice. Place 4 pieces of licorice into each side of the glass, hanging out over the rim, to create the spider's 8 legs.
And then you're good to go with sipping away on your fun and festive Halloween Spider's Kiss cocktail!
Be aware, as the licorice sits in the cocktail's liquid some black licorice flavor does dissolve into the cocktail, so it's best to serve this immediately once it's prepared. I find a small touch of the licorice flavor to taste good. -- But if too much licorice dissolves into the cocktail, the flavor can become overpowering.
So if you're looking to add a little festive touch to your Halloween sipping, give this Spider's Kiss Cocktail a try. It's just the right combination of cute and creepy, that also has the bonus of being super easy to make.
