As you probably already know, simple syrup is a liquid sweetener made by simply dissolving sugar in water. Since the sugar is fully dissolved (rather than in its granulated crystal form), simple syrup is a way of easily dispersing sweetness evenly throughout beverages -- even when they're cold.

Simple syrup is primarily used as an ingredient in cocktails, but can also be used as a sweetener for hot or cold teas (Southern sweet tea, anyone?), coffees, and even as a flavorful drizzle over a fresh fruit salad.

Made with just 3 simple ingredients, Cinnamon Simple Syrup is super easy to make and loaded with fabulous cinnamon flavor.

But did you know you can make flavored simple syrups? And use that flavored simple syrup to bring a nice base of taste to the drinks in which it's used? Well, you sure can!

One of our favorite flavors is this Cinnamon Simple Syrup. Made with just 3 simple ingredients -- granulated sugar, water, and cinnamon sticks, -- it's super easy to make and loaded with fabulous cinnamon flavor.

Bring the sugar and water mixture to a simmer over medium-high heat, stirring it frequently. Then cook and stir the mixture until the sugar is fully dissolved, which takes only about 10 to 20 seconds.

Remove the sugar-water mixture from the heat and add some cinnamon sticks to the hot liquid. Then set the pan aside for the mixture to cool to room temperature.

Recipe FAQs:
  • What is simple syrup? - Simple syrup is a liquid sweetener made by dissolving sugar in water. Since the sugar is fully dissolved (rather than in its granulated crystal form), simple syrup is a way of easily dispersing sweetness evenly throughout beverages, even when they're cold.

  • What is cinnamon simple syrup? - Cinnamon Simple Syrup is a flavored version of basic simple syrup, made by steeping cinnamon sticks in simple syrup's sugar-water mixture while it's warm.

  • What is cinnamon simple syrup used for? - Cinnamon Simple Syrup is used for cocktails, sweetening and flavoring coffee and tea, as a dressing for fruit salad or for drizzling over fresh seasonal fruit, or even for drizzling over layers of cakes before they're frosted.

  • Can I use ground cinnamon instead of cinnamon sticks to flavor my cinnamon simple syrup? - We do not recommend using ground cinnamon instead of cinnamon sticks to flavor Cinnamon Simple Syrup. The syrup's cinnamon flavor is created by steeping cinnamon sticks in the syrup's warm sugar-water mixture, which creates great flavor without getting particles in the finished syrup. Ground cinnamon would introduce particles into the mix, resulting in a cloudy appearance and off-putting grainy texture for the syrup.

  • How long can you keep cinnamon simple syrup in the refrigerator? - Cinnamon Simple Syrup can be stored in the refrigerator for up to about 3 weeks. If at any point it is no longer clear or starts to look cloudy in appearance, discard it. -- If this happens, the syrup has gone bad and should be thrown out.
