So let's take a look at just how easy Dr. Pepper Chocolate Cake is to make.

For the cake itself, start with a boxed Devil’s Food cake mix.  You'll need the amount of eggs and oil noted on the cake mix package, plus some Dr. Pepper and a bit of almond extract to prepare the cake.

Almond extract combines with the chocolate and Dr. Pepper beautifully to create a really wonderful flavor combination in the finished cake.

When you prepare the cake mix, follow the directions on the box, but replace the water it calls for with the same amount of Dr. Pepper instead.  Also, add in 1 & 1/4 teaspoons of almond extract, too.

Mix everything together, pour the batter into a 9x13-inch pan, and bake as directed on the cake mix package.

Once the cake is baked, set it aside to cool.

Easy so far, right?

Well, the super-tasty fudgy icing that beautifully glazes the top is just as easy to make as the cake!

For the fudgy icing, grab some butter, powdered sugar, baking cocoa, Dr. Pepper, and a bit of almond extract ...

Melt the butter in a saucepan. Then add the powdered sugar, a little Dr. Pepper, some cocoa, and a tiny bit of almond extract.

Stir this all together and bring it to a boil over medium to medium-high heat, stirring it very frequently so it doesn't scorch on the bottom of the pan.

The super-tasty fudgy icing that beautifully glazes the top is just as easy to make as the cake!

Once the mixture is boiling, reduce the heat slightly and let it boil for 1 minute.  While it's boiling, be sure to stir the icing constantly so it doesn't burn.  After the minute of boiling, remove the cooked icing from the heat and allow it to cool at room temperature for 25 minutes.

While the icing is still warm, pour it over evenly over the cake to completely cover the top.

You may need to gently spread it a little with a small spatula to get an even covering ... but if you do need to spread it, do so quickly.  Once the chocolate icing starts to set, it gets gloppy when you try to spread it.  And it starts to set pretty quickly.

Immediately sprinkle the top of the cake with chopped pecans (or walnuts would work, too).

And for my North Carolina and other Southern-state fans, you can easily make this a Cheerwine Chocolate Cake, too!

    1. Sure can! You'd just need to reduce the baking time a bit since there's less batter in each pan when baking for a layer cake. Let us know how it turns out!
