We all know and love classic Jello salads. I mean, who can pass by classic Orange Fluff, Seafoam Salad, or Pistachio Watergate Salad without grabbing a bowlful, right? These creamy favorites are hard to resist, making them potluck favorites for sure. And you know what? -- This classic Blueberry Jello Salad is no exception, popping up at potlucks and family get-togethers galore.

I was first introduced to this particular version of Jello salad by my sister-in-law's family. It was way back when I had first moved from Vermont to North Carolina, and my parents had not yet followed my brother and me to the south. Being new to the working world, I didn't have the funds to fly back to Vermont for Thanksgiving and was spending my first Thanksgiving away from my Mom and her cooking.

Thankfully, my sister-in-law's family took me under their wing and invited me to join their extended family's Thanksgiving dinner. I of course accepted their invitation, and am forever grateful for the kindness they showed to include me.

It was at that Thanksgiving dinner I was first introduced to Blueberry Jello Salad, as it's a staple dish at their annual Thanksgiving feast. And I was hooked from the first bite.

In this layered Jello salad version, grape Jello is combined with a can of blueberry pie filling to make the base Jello layer. -- Which makes one wonder ... wouldn't the flavor taste more like grape than blueberry?

But rest assured, the flavor of the finished dish is indeed blueberry, not grape. While a hint of grape flavor remains from the grape Jello, the blueberry pie filling takes over and comes through to make this salad live up to its "blueberry" name.

As with so many Jello salads, the filling also includes a can of crushed pineapple which gives bulk to the filling, as well as adds a little bit of textural crunch, too. Then topped off with a cheesecake-like creamy layer, Blueberry Jello Salad is one delicious classic that's sure to please.

Blueberry Jello Salad Ingredients:

In this classic Jello salad, a fruity Jello layer is then topped with a rich and creamy cheesecake-like topping. To whip up a pan, you'll need:

For the Jello/blueberry layer:
  • Grape Jello - The foundation of the salad's bottom Jello layer. Two 3-ounce packages are needed.
  • Boiling water + cold water - The standard water combination for mixing Jello. Boiling water first dissolves the Jello, followed by cold water to help cool it down and begin the setting process.
  • Crushed pineapple - Canned crushed pineapple gives bulk to the filling, as well as adds a little bit of textural crunch, too.
  • Blueberry pie filling - The star of the dish! Canned blueberry pie filling brings the salad's blueberry element and flavor, overtaking the flavor of the grape Jello to make this salad live up to its "blueberry" name.

For the creamy topping:
  • Cream cheese - Serves as the foundation of the cheesecake-like creamy topping. We recommend using regular full-fat cream cheese, rather than lower-fat Neufchatel, as it stays a bit firmer when combined with the topping's other ingredients.
  • Sour cream - Brings creaminess to the topping and helps create a nice spreadable consistency. Regular or lite sour cream work just fine.
  • Granulated sugar - Sweetens the topping. Powdered sugar could be used in its place just fine.
  • Vanilla extract - Flavors the topping. We recommend using 100% pure vanilla extract, rather than imitation vanilla, for the best flavor result.
  • Chopped pecansA few chopped pecans sprinkled on top of the salad add a nice finished look and textural crunch.

How to Make Blueberry Jello Salad:

Classic Blueberry Jello Salad comes together pretty easily. Get started on the bottom Jello layer by first pouring grape Jello powder into boiling water, stirring until the powder is completely dissolved. Then stir in some cold water, which will bring the temperature down a bit. Add drained crushed pineapple and blueberry pie filling to the Jello and stir until everything's well combined.

Once the Jello layer ingredients are mixed together, pour the Jello mixture into a 9x11" pan. Chill this first layer until set, which can take up to about 3 or 4 hours. (You can speed this setting process along by making sure the cold water used in preparing the Jello mixture is super cold. -- I like to chill it down with ice cubes to make sure it's as cold as I can possibly get it.)

I use a 9x11" pan instead of a 9x13" pan when making my Blueberry Jello Salad because I like the slices to come out a little thicker. But you can certainly use a 9x13" pan, for sure, if you prefer or don't have a slightly smaller pan.

After the Jello layer is set, mix up the creamy topping. -- Place some cream cheese, sour cream, a little granulated sugar, and vanilla extract in a mixing bowl.

Then mix the topping ingredients together with an electric mixer until smooth, -- but do be careful to not overmix.  If the cream cheese and sour cream are mixed too long with the electric mixer, they'll turn thin and runny. Which in turn, makes the Jello salad's topping too thin and runny, too.

Gently spread the creamy topping evenly over the Jello layer, and sprinkle a few chopped pecans on top to finish the salad off.

Then cover and pop the pan in the refrigerator to let everything chill together for at least a few hours before serving.

When you're ready to serve, cut the salad into squares and you're good to go.

Because with its tasty Jello and blueberry pie filling base and creamy cheesecake-like topping, it's one delicious classic that's always sure to please.

    1. I don't believe the texture nor flavor would turn out the same with straight-up fresh blueberries. If you'd like to use fresh blueberries, I would think it could work to make them into homemade blueberry pie filling first & then add it to the Jello ... Here's a link to my recipe for blueberry pie filling if you'd like to give it a try: https://www.thekitchenismyplayground.com/2018/08/blueberry-pie-cookies.html Enjoy!

  3. I have been making this same recipe for the last 45 years after acquiring it from a friend. It has always been one of my top 2 favorite jello salads to make. I have found through the years that most people aren't familiar with it. It is beautiful and delicious to eat!

  4. Have you ever used another flavor jello? My daughter has a reaction to grape flavored things. My stepmom used to make this and I love it, don’t really want to change the flavor.
