When it comes to salad, I love simple flavor-loaded salad dressings.  And this Asian Sesame Dressing is about as flavorful and simple to make as you can get.

You can literally whip up a batch in less than five minutes, with just a quick whisk of 6 simple ingredients.  Then serve it right away, or store it in the refrigerator for up to about two weeks to enjoy when you'd like.

And let me tell you, Asian Sesame Dressing delivers up huge flavor that pairs wonderfully with just about any type of salad.  In addition to its fabulous Asian flavors? -- It also delivers up a nice spicy little kick from crushed red pepper.

Asian Sesame Dressing is about as flavorful and simple to make as you can get.

Pair it with a simple mixed greens salad, broccoli slaw to create a nice Asian slaw, or with cucumbers.  It's all good.

I enjoy Asian Sesame Dressing best on my lunch salads with mixed greens, sliced almonds, chopped chicken, and a few mandarin oranges for sweetness. The combination of sweet mandarin oranges and spicy sesame dressing is wonderful.

It can be used as a marinade, as well, and is especially tasty as a marinade for pork loin or pork tenderloin.  This is one versatile little dressing, indeed!

Asian Sesame Dressing Ingredients

The ingredients needed to make this spicy Asian Sesame Dressing are:

  • Soy sauce - Forms the flavorful Asian-flavored base of the dressing.  Use either regular or reduced-sodium soy sauce, both work great.  I always use reduced-sodium.
  • Canola or vegetable oil - Use these milder-flavored oils to let the Asian flavors shine through.  I don't recommend olive oil for this recipe, as olive oil's stronger flavor would compete with the flavors of the soy sauce and sesame oil.
  • White wine vinegar - Provides the dressing's acid. White wine vinegar is a milder-flavored vinegar.  If you need a substitution, use rice vinegar, which also has a mild and slightly sweet flavor.  Rice vinegar is an ingredient in many Asian dishes, and would also work well in white wine vinegar's place.
  • Sesame oil - Brings the signature sesame flavor to this dressing.  Sesame oil has big bold flavor, so just a small touch is all that's needed.
  • Crushed red pepper - Brings the dressing's spicy heat. Adjust the amount of crushed red pepper to suit your personal taste, from 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon.  I make my dressing with the full 1/4 teaspoon -- and it is indeed on the spicy side.
  • Granulated sugar - A little bit of sugar nicely balances out the acidic ingredients and spice of the dressing.

Sesame oil is a cooking oil made from pressed sesame seeds, typically used for flavoring Asian dishes.

The usual seasonings of salt and pepper aren't needed here.  Soy sauce provides enough saltiness that no additional salt is needed, and crushed red pepper brings the heat.

With the exception of sesame oil, these ingredients are pantry staples most folks probably have on-hand.

Sesame oil is a cooking oil made from pressed sesame seeds, typically used for flavoring Asian dishes.  It has a strong earthy, nutty flavor.

Once opened, store your sesame oil in the refrigerator to extend its shelf-life -- It will keep for about 6 months to a year when refrigerated.  When stored at room temperature, sesame oil will turn rancid much more quickly.

How to Make Asian Sesame Dressing

Making Asian Sesame Dressing is super easy.  If you can measure, pour, and stir, you'll have this dressing under control.

Simply place the ingredients in a small bowl and whisk them together until well combined.  Then use the dressing immediately, or set aside for a bit to allow the flavors to more fully meld.

Asian Sesame Dressing can be stored in the refrigerator for up to about two weeks.

The dressing ingredients will settle out and separate pretty quickly -- Which is no problem.  Just re-whisk everything together right before dressing your salad.
