Have you ever thought of making your own margarita mix?

Not that I have anything against the store-bought stuff, having enjoyed probably more than my fair share of the stuff over the years.  But hey, it's kind of cool to make your own margarita mix from scratch.

A simple mixture of fresh lime and fresh lemon juice, lime and lemon zest, sugar, and pineapple juice, homemade Margarita Mix is really easy to make.

A little hit of pineapple juice gives this mix truly fabulous flavor.

Pineapple juice may be a bit of a surprise ingredient.  But rest assured, it adds a wonderful depth of flavor to the mix and the resulting Margaritas.

The pineapple taste isn't strong enough to really make you think the drink has pineapple juice in it. -- Instead, it adds a rich flavor base that you just know tastes wonderful when you drink it.  If you're like me, you won't be able to put your finger on the taste as being pineapple juice unless or until you know that's what's in it.

Once you've mixed up a batch, use the homemade mix as the base to whip up some truly fabulous Margaritas for sipping.  Just like with the store bought mix, just add a little tequila and Triple Sec and you're good to go.

To make a batch of homemade Margarita Mix from scratch, start with zesting some limes and lemons.  When zesting the citrus be sure to only remove the colored portion of the peel, avoiding the white pith below.  The white pith is bitter and will give an off taste to the finished mix.

You'll need 1 tablespoon each of lime zest and lemon zest.

For the limes, that's the zest of about 2 or 3 limes.  For the lemon zest, it's about 1 large lemon.  Zest the citrus first before cutting to yield the amount of zest needed, then cut and juice them after.

In a saucepan, combine the zests with some sugar, a little water, fresh lime and fresh lemon juice, and a little pineapple juice.

You'll need 3/4 cup fresh lime juice, from about 6 to 8 limes.  And 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice, from about 2 lemons.

Mix up some Margaritas right away, or refrigerate the mix until needed.

The recipe calls for 1/4 cup pineapple juice.  I buy a 6-pack of the small 6-ounce pop-top cans to keep on hand for cooking, rather than getting the large 46-ounce can.  This works well for recipes like this where you only need a little bit of pineapple juice.

Or, you can use the juice drained from a can of pineapple chunks, slices, or crushed pineapple.  Draining these off will easily yield the 1/4 cup needed for the Margarita mix.

Bring the zest and juice mixture to a boil, stirring to make sure the sugar dissolves.  Then allow it to cool to room temperature.

Once cooled, strain the mixture to remove the zests.

Mix up some Margaritas right away, or refrigerate the mix until needed.  It'll keep just fine in the refrigerator for about a week or two.

  2. I learned the hard way, zest then juice. It's really difficult to get the zest off a floppy peel from a juiced fruit! This sounds like a great recipe. We don't drink at our house, but I love mixers like this to have sparklling water in. This is perfect! Pinned - Thanks for sharing at the What's for Dinner Party. I appreciate your contributions! Have a great weekend.
