Chocolate Covered Oreo Cake Recipe

January 17, 2015
With its thick layer of Oreo cream sandwiched between two chocolate cake layers, and topped with rich chocolate ganache and Oreo crumbles, this Chocolate Covered Oreo Cake recipe is one no Oreo lover can resist.

You all, I've made this Chocolate Covered Oreo Cake recipe three times in the last month.  It's just one of those fabulously delicious, but not-too-hard-to-pull-together, cake recipes that's perfect for just about anything.  I made it for my husband's birthday, for Christmas Eve with my family, and then again this week for when a friend was visiting.

Yes, this Chocolate Covered Oreo Cake recipe is indeed perfect for just about anything.  I mean, who doesn't love chocolate cake with Oreo cream filling?
A thick, creamy layer of Oreo cream filling is sandwiched between two layers of chocolate cake ... and then the cake is spread with rich chocolate ganache and topped with Oreo crumbles.

The result is divine chocolatey-ness no Oreo lover can resist.

I can tell you for sure  that my husband and my friend who visited absolutely love this stuff!

How do I know?

Because within twelve hours they had devoured more than 3/4 of the cake.

The devouring commenced with dinner when my friend arrived.  And ended with breakfast the next morning ... where they decided that Chocolate Covered Oreo Cake made the perfect  breakfast.  {And, um,  may or may not have had more than one piece.}

So how do you make this irresistibly delicious Chocolate Covered Oreo Cake recipe?  Taking advantage of the convenience of packaged cake mix, it's super easy.

Start by baking a Devil's food cake according to the package directions.  Then whip up a simple Oreo cream filling with cream cheese, Cool Whip {or homemade whipped cream, if you prefer} and crumbled Oreos ...

... Spread the Oreo cream between the chocolate cake layers ...

... and then top it all with rich chocolate ganache and more Oreo crumbles.

I'm tellin' ya Oreo lovers, it's totally irresistible.

You may just find yourself digging into a couple of pieces for breakfast.

Chocolate Covered Oreo Cake

With its thick layer of Oreo cream sandwiched between two chocolate cake layers, and topped with rich chocolate ganache and Oreo crumbles, this Chocolate Covered Oreo Cake recipe is one no Oreo lover can resist.
prep time: 30 Mcook time: 30 Mtotal time: 60 M

ingredients:

  • 1 (16.25 to 18 oz.) package devil's food chocolate cake mix + ingredients to prepare cake
  • 1 (8 oz.) package cream cheese, softened
  • 1 (8 oz.) container Cool Whip non-dairy whipped topping
  • 12 Oreo cookies, coarsely crushed
  • 1/2 c. granulated sugar
  • 3/4 c. semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 2 T. unsalted butter
  • 1 T. heavy cream

instructions:

How to cook Chocolate Covered Oreo Cake

Bake cake:
  1. Prepare and bake cake as directed on package, preparing in two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Cool cakes in pan for 10 minutes; remove from pans and cool completely on a wire rack.
Prepare filling:
  1. Beat cream cheese and sugar with an electric mixer on medium speed until well blended. Gently stir in Cool Whip and then crushed Oreos.
  2. Place one cake layer on a cake plate; spread with cream cheese mixture {it will be a thick layer}. Top with remaining cake layer.
Prepare chocolate glaze:
  1. Place chocolate chips, butter, and heavy cream in a small saucepan. Heat over low heat, stirring very frequently, until melted and blended together.
  2. Remove from heat and cool in pan for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  3. Spoon chocolate glaze onto the center of the top of the cake; gently spread toward the edge of the cake {a little at a time}, just barely getting it to the edge of the cake ~ it will start to spill over the edge on its own and gravity will do the work of creating 'spills' over the edge of the cake.
  4. Store cake in the refrigerator.

  12. I would like to use this filling in a completely frosted cake, does it hold up okay? Or will it end up falling/squishing out the sides?

    1. The filling holds up pretty good once it sets up. I would suggest filling the cake, and then chilling it before frosting to allow the filling to firm up ... I would think that would work. But admittedly, have never tried it!! ... so can't speak for 100% sure. Enjoy!
