"Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale
A tale of a fateful trip
That started from this tropic port aboard this tiny ship.
The mate was a mighty sailing man, the skipper brave and sure.
Five passengers set sail that day
For a 3 hour tour, a 3 hour tour ..."

Come on, now you know you started singing that song as soon as you read the title of this tasty tropical cocktail!  Ahhh, the iconic theme song from the old-but-goodie show Gilligan's Island.

Though the show was done filming before my husband and I were even born, Gilligan's Island is still one of our absolute favorite shows from our childhood.  To this day, my husband can still accurately (and in detail) describe and quote scenes from the show.

This Gilligan's Island Cocktail is a tasty one, indeed.  It's on the fruity sweet side, which makes it perfect for summer sipping.

And when a re-run episode comes on TV?  He can usually say who the island-crashing guest star is going to be or what the episode is about within the first two minutes of the show.

Yes, though the show only filmed for 3 seasons, ending in 1967, it's been adored by so many ever since.  And it seems as though all lovers of the show know and can sing the theme song by heart ...

"The weather started getting rough, the tiny ship was tossed.
If not for the courage of the fearless crew,
The Minnow would be lost, the Minnow would be lost.
The ship set ground on the shore of this uncharted desert isle
With Gilligaaaan
The Skipper, too
A millionaire, and his wife
A movie star
The Professor and Mary Ann,
Here on Gilligan's Isle!"

So when my husband and I came across the recipe for this Gilligan's Island Cocktail, we absolutely had to give it a try.

It's a pretty simple cocktail made with just four ingredients - orange juice, cranberry juice, peach schnapps, and coconut vodka.

I must admit from watching the show, I don't recall the Gilligan's Island castaways eating cranberries, peaches, or oranges as a regular part of their diet - so I'm not sure how those things in the cocktail relate to Gilligan.

But coconuts?

Now that's another story!  Who can ever forget coconuts endlessly falling on Gilligan's head?  Or, the castaways drinking out of coconut shells?  Or, Mary Ann making her ever-popular coconut cream pie?  (It may not be Mary Ann's, but here's my coconut cream pie recipe ... it's darn good, if I do say so myself.)

But whether or not the island castaways actually enjoyed cranberries, peaches, and oranges with their coconuts - the combination of those four things in this cocktail is a darn tasty one.

But whether or not the island castaways actually enjoyed cranberries, peaches, and oranges with their coconuts - the combination of those four things in this cocktail is a darn tasty one.  So I'm willing to go along with the creative license on this one.

This Gilligan's Island Cocktail is a tasty one, indeed.  It's on the fruity sweet side, which makes it perfect for summer sipping.

And it's really easy to make.

Just pour some orange juice into a tall cocktail glass, and then add in an equal amount of cranberry juice.  The combination of these two juices are what give the cocktail its beautiful orangey-pinkish hue.  (p.s.:  We just love our mini measuring glass for mixing cocktails.)

Add in a little coconut vodka and peach schnapps, and give the mixture a good stir.

Then add in ice to fill the glass, and stir to chill the cocktail.  Garnish with a fresh orange wedge, fresh peach slice, and a maraschino cherry on a bamboo cocktail pick if you'd like, and you're ready to sip away on this tasty concoction!

So whether you're a fan of the show that inspired its name, or just love sweet tropical cocktails - give this Gilligan's Island Cocktail a try.  It's such a fun and fruity summer drink to sip on!

Now if the Gilligan's Island castaways could have gotten their hands on some cranberries and peaches, couldn't you just imagine them sipping on one of these out of their coconut shell cups by the lagoon?

Mmmm hmmmm, I'm sure Gilligan would have loved it.

  2. I often mix orange juice and cranberry together for breakfast and even had a cast member ask me about it one time at Disney world; those two are a great flavor combo and I bet they taste great with added coconut and peach too.

  4. Hi Tracey!
This is such a fun post! I use to eat my after school snack watching Gilligan's Island at 4 0'clock every afternoon. I'm also guilty of watching the 3 hour line-up of reruns on Sunday afternoons if we're home with nothing else going on. I have already printed out and pinned the recipe to my Beverage board. I can't wait to give it a try! Perfect for back porch sitting and sipping! Thanks for sharing at Homestyle Gathering! I hope to see you again this week!
