Or, you could use the amounts given in this recipe ... bake in 2 cake pans, and then slice each of the 2 cakes horizontally into 2 layers, creating 4 layers for your 4-layer cake. Either way, I would increase the frosting amounts by 1/2 (make 1 and 1/2 batches), as I think you'll need more frosting.
