Memorial Day and the 4th of July are almost upon us!  Who's like me and already thinking of their red, white, and blue recipes to serve up for the fireworks and pool-side festivities?

Aside from Thanksgiving and Christmas, I think the 4th of July is the most fun holiday to cook for.  Because there are just so many simple ways to incorporate fun red, white, and blue foods into the menu.  Like our daughter's favorite Red White & Blue Strawberry Cheesecake Bites and Red White & Blue Italian Ice Floats.

Or, with this easy Red White & Blue Virgin White Sangria.  Made even more fun and festive by including "white" fruit stars.

But as we all know, when it comes to available fruits that are truly white, we're pretty limited in our choices.

So when this red, white & blue sangria idea came to me, my first question became ~ What fruit to use for the "white" stars?

And honeydew melon first popped into my mind.

Even though its not bright white, I figured once mixed into the sangria along with blueberries and sliced strawberries, the honeydew stars would be light colored enough to pass as white.

So I seeded and cut the melon into "planks" about 1/2-inch thick, and then used different sized star cutters to cut the melon flesh into stars.

The larger star cutter is a standard cookie cutter, and the smaller star I actually dug out of our daughter's Play-dough toys.  Hey, you've got to get creative and use what you've got, right??  But no worries ... I washed it before using it with the melon.

The sangria itself is a simple mix of white grape juice, seltzer water, and a little bit of fresh-squeezed orange juice.

If honeydew's not your thing, I think fresh pineapple slices would work for star cutting, as well.

Mix the juices and seltzer water together in a large pitcher, and then toss in the honeydew stars, fresh blueberries, and fresh sliced strawberries ...

If you'd like, add a little fruit garnish to each glass for a little extra fun.

I reserved a few of the smaller honeydew stars, a few whole small strawberries, and a handful of the larger blueberries.  Then I slipped those onto small cocktail skewers ...

prep time: 20 Mcook time: total time: 20 M

ingredients:

  • 3 c. white grape juice, chilled
  • 4 c. seltzer water, chilled
  • 1/4 c. fresh squeezed orange juice {about 1 orange}
  • 1 honeydew melon
  • 1 pint fresh blueberries
  • about 1 c. sliced fresh strawberries

instructions:

How to cook Red White & Blue Virgin White Sangria

  1. Cut honeydew melon in half; scoop out and discard seeds. Slice flesh into “planks” about ½-inch thick. Use various sized star cookie cutters to cut honeydew melon into star shapes. Reserve melon scraps for snacking or another use. {If you don’t want to make stars, just cut about half the honeydew melon into small cubes.}
  2. In a large pitcher, stir together white grape juice, orange juice, and seltzer. Add honeydew stars, blueberries, and strawberries. Stir gently to combine. Add some ice.
  3. Serve over ice.
TRACEY'S NOTES
  1. This is a great drink treat for the kiddos!
  2. If preparing in advance, hold out the seltzer water and strawberries, adding these just before serving {so that the seltzer doesn't lose its fizz and the strawberries don't lose their color}.
