Sometimes a simple fruit salad sure hits the spot.

Lately I've been whipping up a quick fruit salad as one of my go-to dinner side dishes ... just opening up the fridge, grabbing whatever fruit we have on hand, tossing it together, and serving it up. I love it because it's quick, easy, and goes with just about anything.

But most importantly though, the whole family likes it.  It seems whether it be for a dinner side, breakfast, brunch, potluck get-together, or just about any occasion, fruit salads are both versatile and loved by all.

Giving fruit a simple little glaze sure can take the salad up a notch.  And nothing's easier than doing just that with a simple can of apple pie filling.

While my method of simply tossing together whatever's-on-hand fruit certainly works to create a great fruit salad, giving fruit a simple little glaze sure can take the salad up a notch.  And nothing's easier than doing just that with a simple can of apple pie filling.

Adding apple pie filling to fruit salad does four things:
  • Adds moistness ~ the syrupy part of the pie filling clings to the fruit, adding a nice moist glaze throughout the salad.
  • Brings wonderful flavor ~ the sweetness and cinnamon of the pie filling pairs wonderfully with the fresh fruit, amping up the salad's flavor.
  • Keeps cut fruits, like apples and bananas, from turning brown ~ all without the addition of lemon juice, which is what's typically used to prevent brownness.
  • Adds tender apple chunks as a fruit element ~ the soft chunks of cooked apples from the pie filling beautifully compliment the crunch of fresh apples and the other fruits.

I use both red and green grapes, Red Delicious apples, Granny Smith apples, blueberries, and bananas as the base of my salad.

But you could certainly use any combination of fruit you'd like, even including some canned fruit if you'd prefer.  Just keep the total amount of fruit to 6 or 7 cups.  Also keep in mind that apple pie filling has cinnamon in it, so choose fruits that pair well with cinnamon.

The next time you're whipping up a fruit salad, grab a can of apple pie filling and toss it in.  You'll have one tasty salad that'll be loved by all!

Apple Pie Filling Fruit Salad

With it's mix of crisp fresh fruit, tender chunks of cooked apples, and cinnamon-laced glaze, Apple Pie Filling Fruit Salad will be loved by all. Perfect for breakfast, brunch, potluck get-togethers, or as a simple dinner side.
prep time: 20 Mcook time: total time: 20 M

ingredients:

  • 1 (21 oz.) can apple pie filling
  • 3 c. grapes, (red, green, or a combination of both)
  • 1 Granny Smith apple, unpeeled, cored & chopped
  • 1 Red Delicious apple, unpeeled, cored & chopped
  • 1 c. blueberries
  • 2 firm bananas, sliced

instructions:

How to cook Apple Pie Filling Fruit Salad

  1. Slice large grapes in half. In a large bowl, combine grapes, apples, and blueberries.
  2. Run a long sharp knife through the can of apple pie filling several times to coarsely chop the apples. Spoon over fruit mixture and toss gently to combine and coat the fruit. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
  3. Just before serving, add sliced bananas and stir gently to coat with the apple pie filling glaze.
TRACEY'S NOTES
  1. Use any combination of fruit you'd like, keeping the total amount to 6 or 7 cups of fruit. Keep in mind that apple pie filling has cinnamon in it, so choose fruits that are complimented by cinnamon.
  2. Once coated in the apple pie filling glaze, the sliced bananas will keep from turning brown for several hours ... or even overnight if they are very firm bananas. I still add mine right before serving, but you do have a few hours leeway if need be.
