It's no secret I love to bake.  And I got a very early start in the kitchen, baking right alongside my Mom. This is me when I was four years old ... helping decorate my own birthday cake, no doubt.

And I've been baking up a storm in the kitchen ever since.

Even though I'm now in my early 40s, quite often I'm still baking right alongside my Mom.  Yes, we still share the love of cooking together.

We also still share the love of collecting recipes, reading cookbooks, and reading foodie magazines, too.

Oh, these Salted Toffee Chocolate Squares are chock full of that sweet-salty combination we love.

It's not unusual at all to hear us talking about the latest new recipe we made ... what worked well, what went wrong, what we'd change.  Or to see us thumbing through the other one's pile of recipes on the shelf, cut out from here, there, and everywhere.  Or for us to grab a cookbook off the other one's shelf and look to see what's got a dog-eared page, just waiting it's turn in the got-to-try-this queue.

Yes, it's clear I inherited my love of baking, recipe hoarding, and foodie reading from my Mom.

And the latest recipe to make it to the top of my got-to-try-this list is one that has my Mom's and my shared favorite flavor combination  ~ chocolate, toffee, and salt.  Oh, these Salted Toffee Chocolate Squares are chock full of that sweet-salty combination we love.

Not only do these sweet-and-salty little treats combine the most fabulous flavors on Earth ... they're super easy, too!  Super easy recipes -- another one of Mom's and my shared loves.

Just as with other cracker candy versions, like ever-popular Graham Cracker Pralines, start by laying out the cracker base.

Line a baking pan with foil.  Then lay out a layer of graham crackers on the foil with the edges of the crackers touching.

For this salted toffee version, then sprinkle the graham crackers with toffee bits and sliced almonds.

You can find toffee bits in the baking section of the grocery store right alongside the chocolate chips, and the ones available will most likely be Heath brand toffee bits.  If they're not available in your store, you can also crush up a few full-sized Heath bars.

Then cook up cracker candy's signature sugar-and-butter syrup.

And while bubbling hot, pour the sugar syrup evenly over the graham crackers.

Pop the concoction in the oven to bake up, and then ... as soon as it comes out of the oven ... sprinkle on chocolate chips and sea salt.  I use fleur de sel finishing salt, but any course sea salt works great.

Then try to refrain from doing a face plant into the pan while you wait for them to cool.  It'll be tough because these things look and smell so good.  But I know you can do it.

Once cool, cut or break the salted toffee grahams into squares.  If you refrigerate the pan for about 15 minutes, it's super easy to snap this stuff into pieces with your hands.

And then? Then enjoy the salted-toffee-and-chocolate deliciousness!

Oh, these bars are so good.  They make for the perfect Christmas cookie tray treat, gift from the kitchen, or everyday snacking treat.

  9. Do you ever substitute peanuts for almonds? I have a friend who is allergic to tree nuts, but not peanuts and would like to try this to share at a baking and sharing day.
