13 Top Flops of 2013 {or Should I Say BOTTOM 13 Posts of the Year??}

December 31, 2013

Well, here we are at the last day of 2013.  Earlier this week I shared the top 13 posts of the year from The Kitchen is My Playground, which is always my favorite post of the year to write.  I love going back through the year's posts and finding out what your favorites were.

Well, I also decided to take a little bit different view into the year this year ... and figured out the least viewed 13 posts of 2013, too.  You know, just for a little fun.  And so here they are ... the 13 Top Flops of 2013!

Who knows ... maybe you'll like them better the 2nd time around.  Ha!

13.  Mocha Egg Nog - Oh, such a fun way to enjoy egg nog!  But apparently mocha doesn't float your boat.  'Cause you all put this scrumptious nog treat in your bottom picks of the year.  Coming in at #13, it's on the borderline ... but in the bottom, none the less.  {Is it the look of 'a bottom' reflected in the mug in the photo, by chance?????}

12.  Lemon-Coconut Bars - Little lemon-y bites of sunshine ... that you didn't like.  Admittedly, I didn't do a very good job editing this photo, making the Lemon-Coconut Bars a little too ... well ... lemon-y.  Apparently you all don't like food the color of Big Bird!

11.  Cherry Chocolate Chip Cookies - You know, cookies seem to be really hit-or-miss on The Kitchen is My Playground.  Readers seem to either LOVE them, or almost completely disregard them.  And these little beauties were almost completely disregarded.  But they still remain one of my all-time favorite cookies!!

10.  Coconut-Key Lime Pie Ice Cream Cups - Okay, the photo on this one isn't all that appealing ... but the flavor of this easy coconut-key lime pie ice cream certainly is!  Give it a chance, people, give it a chance.

9.  Pumpkin Biscuits - Yep, another not-so-appealing photo.  But the biscuits are really yummy, I promise!

8.  Glazed Poppy Seed Tea Bread - Hmmmm ... I'm surprised to see this one in the bottom posts ... 'cause this poppy seed tea bread is truly a family favorite.  It's so moist and flavorful!  Interestingly enough though, this bread's little sister, Glazed Poppy Seed Muffins with Strawberry Butter, did VERY well!  Must have been the strawberry butter ...  :-)

7.  Pork Tenderloin & Pimento Cheese Crostini Melts - You know, any time I've posted about pimento cheese, it's flopped.  And we love the stuff!  Guess there's just not a huge audience out there for this Southern institution!

6.  Apple Fried Rice - I know the combination sounds weird, but it's really good!!

5.  Turtle Krispie Treats - Really??????  Krispie treats.  Caramel.  Chocolate.  What's not to love???

4.  Mocha Cream Pie - Annnnnd our 2nd mocha treat to be in the bottom picks ... I can practically hear my Mom's *sniff, sniff* as she sheds a tear or two to see her favorite beloved flavor continue to land in the bottom ...

3.  Chipotle Sweet Potato Chowder - Oh, if you only knew how hard I worked to perfect this recipe ... and then it lands in the #3 spot of bottom picks!  Seriously, this chowder was a thorn in my side for the longest time as I tried to get the the amount of chipotle just right.  The chipotle can go from "oh, that's a yummy touch of flavor" to "holy cow, my mouth is one fire!" in a heartbeat.  We ate and ate and ate and ate ... and ate ... this chowder over and over during it's creation.  And now it lives in the bottom barrel of The Kitchen is My Playground flops.

2.  Turkey & Apricot Sliders - Okay, so this recipe for using up turkey leftovers didn't fly.  {Pun intended.}

1.  Mocha Parfaits - And here we have our absolute bottom post of the year! ... ANOTHER mocha treat!  When my husband saw the list of top flops and saw these parfaits holding the top ... er, bottom ... spot, he had a fit.  'Cause these are his absolute favorite item on the blog this year ... he loves them so much he requested them for his birthday 'cake.'  He's still distraught about it.  But I do trust that he'll get over it ... someday.

Happy New Year to you!
And we hope you keep joining us in 2014 here at The Kitchen is My Playground ... flops and all!!

Enjoy these other FAVORITES from The Kitchen is My Playground! ...

  1. Tracey, it is interesting to see how some things appeal to certain folks and others just do not ring their bells. You know, I really like the looks of the cherry and chocolate cookies and I am pretty sure I left a comment about them. I still intend to make these for my chocolate and cherry loving hubby.

    Happy New Year, Tracey!

  2. Hi Tracey, Jenny here from New Zealand. I really appreciate all the work that you do producing such a top rate foodie blog. I love it!! Still haven't tried as many of your recipes as I would have liked, and a few of the ingredients are not common here. But I'm sure I could find a close substitute. Keep on cooking, you are an inspiration!

  4. Don't underestimate the power of Pinterest. Many will only pin vertical photos with good natural color. I hate it when I see a really good recipe on a blog with a picture I can't pin to my board or to any of the many group boards I am on.
